Thermally integrated microreactor for Sabatier reaction: Study of air-cooled and inert-diluted counter-current operation strategies

Aswathy K. Raghu et al.

Summary: CO2 methanation is a catalytic process that reduces CO2 to methane, with side reactions producing CO. Efficient thermal management is crucial for good reactor performance. Comparison between external cooling and feed dilution for heat removal in a thermally-integrated microreactor shows potential for high selectivity to methane.

Intensification of load flexible fixed bed reactors by optimal design of staged reactor setups

Konrad L. Fischer et al.

Summary: Research on the dynamic and load flexible operation of fixed bed reactors, using CO2 methanation as a case study, has identified challenges and potential solutions in reactor design and operation. A staged reactor setup with catalyst dilution profile was found to improve load flexible reactor performance, along with the potential for flow split and bypass to adapt the flow field based on the current load level. The feasibility of this setup for dynamic operation was successfully verified through dynamic simulation of different operating scenarios.

Micro-scale simulation and intensification of complex Sabatier reaction system in cylindrical catalyst bed

Wenhao Shen et al.

Summary: The study used DEM and CFD to simulate the methanation process based on the Sabatier reaction, finding that as the reaction progresses, the concentration distribution of substances in the catalyst and the distribution of reaction rate values will change significantly. In a steady state, the effective utilization rate of the catalyst is only about 10%, and carbon deposition in the outer layer and reactor inlet is more serious.

Split feed strategy for low-permselective membrane reactors: A simulation study for enhancing CO2 methanation

Igor G. I. Iwakiri et al.

Summary: The study found that at higher temperatures, the SOD membrane can effectively remove water and reactants, but methane permeation limits the process performance. By splitting the feed between the retentate and permeate, reactant loss can be reduced and conversion rate improved.
