Hydrogen in energy transition: A review

Ankica Kovac et al.

Summary: The main step towards creating a carbon-neutral society is the implementation of renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels; while hydrogen technology is recognized as the most promising choice, its large-scale implementation is still in progress. In the coming decades, we can expect the utilization of hydrogen's vast ecological potential.

Robust design of a future 100% renewable european energy supply system with hydrogen infrastructure

Dilara Gulcin Caglayan et al.

Summary: Variable renewable energy sources (VRES) are considered the cornerstones of future energy supply systems, with green hydrogen proposed as a sustainable energy carrier to address their intermittency. Designing a fully VRES-based European energy system, taking into account supply security across 38 weather year scenarios, and considering the impact of different power generation locations, can lead to lower total annual costs for the system.

Methane pyrolysis in a molten gallium bubble column reactor for sustainable hydrogen production: Proof of concept & techno-economic assessment

Brandon Jose Leal Perez et al.

Summary: Currently, nearly 50% of global hydrogen production is derived from Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), which leads to significant CO2 emissions and exacerbates global warming. The use of methane pyrolysis with melts of metals and salts produces less CO2 and offers a more sustainable route to generate hydrogen, with the added benefit of valuable carbon co-product sales potential. Techno-economic and sensitivity analyses suggest that the molten metal technology can compete with SMR if co-product carbon is saleable and a CO2 tax is imposed.

On the reduction of electric energy consumption in electrolysis: A thermodynamic study

Deepinder Jot Singh Aulakh et al.

Summary: This study aims to reduce the production cost of hydrogen via electrolysis by using thermal energy instead of electric energy, ultimately achieving hydrogen production at higher temperatures through electrolysis. By supplementing the inlet steam with thermal energy from another process, the electricity demand can be significantly reduced, leading to cost savings and improved efficiency.
