Identifying the prevalence, correlates, and policy consequences of anti-vaccine social identity

Matt Motta et al.

Summary: Scholarly and journalistic profiles show that some Americans identify as anti-vaxxers to fulfill social goals. This social identification may lead to increased acceptance of vaccine misinformation and resistance to evidence-based medicine. A survey found that about 22% of Americans identify as anti-vaxxers and embrace the label as a social identity. They tend to have less trust in scientific experts and exhibit more individualistic traits. Among self-identified anti-vaxxers, social identification is associated with stronger opposition to childhood vaccine requirements.

Digital Design Marginalization: New Perspectives on Designing Inclusive Interfaces

Jaisie Sin et al.

Summary: Digital Design Marginalization (DDM) is the exclusion of certain users and contributing to marginalization in other areas of their lives through digital interface design. Non-inclusive designs can create barriers for underrepresented users in accessing essential services like personal finance and healthcare. To prevent digital marginalization, designers, service providers, and policy makers need to take measures to ensure inclusivity.

Opening Research Commissioning To Civic Participation: Creating A Community Panel To Review The Social Impact of HCI Research Proposals

Ian G. Johnson et al.

Summary: This paper reports on a process that invited distinct groups of citizens to co-develop and apply social impact assessment criteria for reviewing research proposals on HCI, social justice, and digital technologies. The findings explore how people defined social impact, negotiated their role as reviewers, and articulated the value of HCI research for social justice. The work contributes to developing effective participatory methods and collaborative processes to produce digital technologies that support social justice in the HCI field.

A comparison design study of feedback modalities to support deep breathing whilst performing work tasks

Karen Anne Cochrane et al.

Summary: This research compared different feedback modalities on individuals' experience and ability to perform breath-based techniques at work. Sound was found to be the most successful feedback for the majority of participants, followed by vibration and ambient light. Participants exhibited three different feedback patterns: ignoring the feedback, not understanding the feedback and being overwhelmed by it, and successfully using the feedback to initiate deep breathing and reflect on the change in the quality of breathing.
