Shoulder, elbow, and wrist joint angle excursions vary by gesture during touchscreen interaction

Deanna S. Asakawa et al.

Summary: This study compared the joint motions of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist during touchscreen interaction, showing that the joint excursions at these joints are relatively small when performing gestures on a touchscreen.

Differences in muscle activity, kinematics, user performance, and subjective assessment between touchscreen and mid-air interactions on a tablet

Jinghua Huang et al.

Summary: Research compared the differences between touchscreen and mid-air interactions in gesture input modalities, finding that mid-air interaction had lower muscular loads, smaller wrist joint excursions, shorter task completion time, and better subjective ratings. Swipe gestures in the vertical direction tended to possess higher muscular loads than in the horizontal direction during touchscreen interaction. These findings could guide the appropriate selection and use of input modalities in the future HCI field.

User-Defined Gestures for Mid-Air Interaction: A Comparison of Upper Limb Muscle Activity, Wrist Kinematics, and Subjective Preference

Jinghua Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to apply a novel assessment system combining EMG, electrogoniometry, and subjective preference in user gesture elicitation experiments. Results showed that the system effectively determined gestures with lower physiological loads for commands, except for "Maximize," aligning with users' mental models. Ultimately, an optimal user-defined gesture set for HCI commands was developed.

The effects of shoulder posture on neck and shoulder musculoskeletal loading and discomfort during smartphone usage

Weerasak Tapanya et al.

Summary: The study found that as the shoulder flexion angle increased, activities of the anterior deltoid and lower trapezius muscles significantly increased, while there was an opposite effect on the cervical erector spinae and upper trapezius muscles. A recommended shoulder posture of 30 degrees flexion was identified as yielding the best compromise between activation levels of the four muscles studied. This angle also resulted in the lowest neck/shoulder discomfort score.
