A Validation Roadmap of Multi-Physics Simulators of the Resonator of MW-Class CW Gyrotrons for Fusion Applications

Laura Savoldi et al.

Summary: There is growing interest in the multi-physics modeling of the resonance cavity of MW-class continuous-wave gyrotrons, particularly in thermal-hydraulic and thermo-mechanic modeling. A multi-physics simulator has been developed by several European institutions to address the challenges posed by increasing target power and cavity deformation, with a focus on highlighting gaps in comparisons with experimental data and suggesting a roadmap for filling those gaps.

Towards a 1.5 MW, 140 GHz gyrotron for the upgraded ECRH system at W7-X

Konstantinos A. Avramidis et al.

Summary: The development of a 1.5 MW 140 GHz CW prototype gyrotron for the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator has started, with KIT responsible for the scientific design of the tube. A pre-prototype gyrotron has also been developed for experimental validation prior to the construction of the CW prototype in 2021. The focus is on the scientific design and its numerical and experimental validation.
