Turbulent characteristics and energy transfer in the far field of active-grid turbulence

Y. Zheng et al.

Summary: Turbulent characteristics in the far field of active-grid turbulence were investigated using hot-wire anemometry in wind tunnel experiments. The integral length scale slightly decreases with streamwise distance in the far field for the double-random modes, while the nondimensional dissipation rate is around 0.5. Regardless of active-grid motions, an equilibrium scaling with a constant C-e is established in the far field of the double-random modes.

Energy dissipation and enstrophy production/destruction at very low Reynolds numbers in the final stage of the transition period of decay in grid turbulence

Y. Zheng et al.

Summary: The decay characteristics of turbulent kinetic energy and enstrophy in grid turbulence were investigated through wind tunnel experiments. It was found that at very low Reynolds number Re_λ, the dissipation rate and enstrophy decay rate both increase rapidly with decreasing Reynolds number, indicating the dominant effect of enstrophy destruction in the final stage of the transition period of decay.

A turbulence dissipation inhomogeneity scaling in the wake of two side-by-side square prisms

J. G. Chen et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the scaling of turbulent energy dissipation rate in the cross-stream direction of turbulent wake flows generated by two side-by-side square prisms. The results showed that the normalised turbulence dissipation coefficient for residual incoherent turbulence scaled similarly along the cross-stream direction after removal of large-scale coherent structures.

Analysis of Lundgren's matched asymptotic expansion approach to the Karman-Howarth equation using the eddy damped quasinormal Markovian turbulence closure

M. Meldi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates whether the features of nonequilibrium cascade can be captured in classical dissipation scaling by turbulence closures. The EDQNM results suggest that the Kolmogorov inertial range equilibrium is never obtained, regardless of Reynolds number. Equilibrium is only reached near the Taylor length as Reynolds number approaches infinity, with a gradual departure from equilibrium as the length scale moves towards larger scales.

Nonequilibrium dissipation scaling in large Reynolds number turbulence generated by rectangular fractal grids

Shaokai Zheng et al.

Summary: The study documents and discusses the turbulent fields generated by rectangular fractal grids, showing that the turbulence intensity position and spreading characteristics are related to the ratio of grid bar lengths and Reynolds number, and that these turbulent flows exhibit quasi-homogeneity in the decay region but with poorer isotropy.
