International Comparisons of Poverty in South Asia

T. M. Tonmoy Islam et al.

Summary: This paper explores the methodological differences in constructing national consumption aggregates for estimating international poverty rates in South Asian countries, finding that using standardized consumption aggregates can significantly reduce international poverty rates. Comparing standardized and nonstandardized monetary welfare indicators with other nonmonetary indicators suggests that the latter are more consistent with standardized consumption aggregates.
