Approaches towards the development of heteropolyacid-based high temperature membranes for PEM fuel cells

Wessam Nimir et al.

Summary: Operating PEMFCs at higher temperatures offers benefits such as enhanced kinetics, heat recovery, and better water management. However, existing membranes need modification or new membranes need to be developed to withstand high temperature operation. Heteropolyacids (HPAs) have been investigated as additives in PEMFCs membranes to improve proton conductivity and reduce fuel crossover. Successful implementation of HPAs requires proper immobilization techniques in the polymer matrix.

Multi-sub-inlets at cathode flow-field plate for current density homogenization and enhancement of PEM fuel cells in low relative humidity

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: This article investigates the use of multi-sub-inlet designs on the cathode flow-field plate of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell to improve current density uniformity and overall cell performance. The results show that compared to conventional designs, the multi-sub-inlet design can improve oxygen distribution, enhance water removal capacity, and maintain a low pressure drop, leading to improved cell performance. Additionally, increasing the flow rate of the sub-inlets can further enhance the maximum power density while maintaining oxygen distribution uniformity.

Machine learning modeling for proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance

Adithya Legala et al.

Summary: This study develops data-based models for the performance attributes and internal states of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) using various machine learning methods. Techniques such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine Regressor (SVR) are employed to accurately predict cell voltage, membrane resistance, and membrane hydration level under different operating conditions. The results show that ANN has an advantage in multivariable output regression, while SVR is beneficial for simple regressions. By incorporating advanced modeling techniques and calibration procedures, accurate data-based models for PEMFC can be built solely on validated physics-based models, reducing the need for extensive experimentation.
