Improve fatigue and mechanical properties of high carbon bearing steel by a new double vacuum melting route

Zhiyue Shi et al.

Summary: A new method of double vacuum melting (conventional second refining + vacuum arc refining [CSR + VAR]) has been tried, which has 33% lower production cost compared to the traditional VIM + VAR method. The new method reduces the size of inclusions and improves fatigue strength and life. The development of crescent-shaped granular bright facet (GBF) zones is estimated to be responsible for a large portion of fatigue life.

Effective stress and fatigue life prediction with mean stress correction models on a ferritic stainless steel sheet

Gyoko Oh

Summary: This study investigates the deformation behavior and fatigue strengths under plane bending loads using standard sheet specimens. An effective stress model is proposed and it shows good fitting results with the experimental data. The predicted failure cycles using the proposed model agree well with the observed results, while conventional relations, such as Goodman's, do not provide a good fit.

Comparison of microstructure and heat treatment distortion of gear steels with and without Nb addition

Guo-qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: By adding a small amount of niobium element in carburizing steel, a uniform and fine prior austenite grain size can be obtained, resulting in a deep hardened layer and hindered austenite grain growth. This leads to lower heat treatment distortion and improved performance of the steel.

Fatigue fracture and probabilistic assessments of a cone and pipe welded structure of stainless steels

Gyoko Oh

Summary: Probabilistic assessments are essential for weldments due to large scatters in the fatigue strength. This study focuses on thin-walled cone-pipe welded joints of stainless steels, conducting fatigue tests under bending loads and analyzing the stress-life curves using various statistical distributions. The research also investigates the metallographic structures and stress concentration states to elucidate the causes of the strengths and scatters in the weldments.

Fatigue strength distribution and probabilistic evaluation on stainless steel welded components under mixed mode loading

Gyoko Oh

Summary: Through fatigue tests and data evaluation, fatigue strengths, limits, lives, and failure probabilities under different loading conditions can be predicted. The notch factors, fatigue strengths, and scatters of welded components mainly depend on the weld flank angle and material factors.

Martensite transformation of retained austenite with diverse stability and strain partitioning during tensile deformation of a carbide-free Bainitic steel

Feiyu Zhao et al.

Summary: A carbide-free bainitic steel with excellent mechanical properties was studied, and the transformation behavior of austenite to martensite with different morphologies during tensile straining was quantitatively characterized. It was found that different morphologies of austenite transformed at different stages of deformation, affecting the strain partitioning and contributing to the work hardening rate of the steel.
