Removal of arsenic from contaminated groundwater using biochar: a technical review

O. M. Siddiq et al.

Summary: Groundwater is a crucial source of drinking water in many countries, but faces pollution issues, particularly arsenic contamination in certain areas. The adverse health effects of arsenic have prompted research into eco-friendly and cost-effective technologies for treatment. Biochar has shown promise in removing arsenic, but efforts to scale up treatment systems remain limited. Research is also focusing on real-time monitoring techniques for combining with biochar in evaluating adsorption studies and identifying opportunities for further study.

Pollution, risks, and sources of heavy metals in sediments from the urban rivers flowing into Haizhou Bay, China

Xiaoqian Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the heavy metal pollution in the sediments of seven rivers flowing into Haizhou Bay in eastern China. The results showed that the Shawang River and Linhong River were severely polluted, while most sediments met the marine sediment quality criteria of China. However, Cd posed a considerable ecological risk due to its high enrichment. These findings suggest the need for measures to mitigate the potential risk of heavy metal pollution in the sediments of these rivers.

Cadmium, lead, and zinc immobilization in soil using rice husk biochar in the presence of citric acid

M. S. Islam et al.

Summary: The study found that under low concentrations of citric acid, biochar effectively reduced the solubility and extractability of cadmium, lead, and zinc in soil, but this trend reversed under high concentrations of citric acid. Therefore, the combination of biochar with low levels of citric acid may be the most effective treatment for immobilization and redistribution of metals in contaminated soils.

Redox-reactive contaminant removal using biochar-coated metals: the role of electrochemical properties

Y. -D. Seo et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar-coated metals are effective in reducing redox-reactive contaminants, with the electron-donating capacities (EDCs) of biochar, metals, and biochar-coated metals significantly higher than their electron-accepting capacities (EACs). The linear relationship between EDCs and kinetic rates indicates that electron transfer plays a crucial role in the reductive removal of contaminants. The research suggests that biochar-coated metals can be utilized as sorbents and reductants for redox-reactive contaminants in subsurface environments.

Alkali-modified biochar as a sustainable adsorbent for the low-temperature uptake of nitric oxide

S. Anthonysamy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the low-temperature oxidative uptake of NO on alkali-modified biochar, showing that the NO capture capacity was significantly improved after modification. The adsorption capacity of KOH-activated biochar reached 87.0 mg/g at 30 degrees C, mainly attributed to factors like oxygen functionalities and carbon defects.

Goethite modified biochar simultaneously mitigates the arsenic and cadmium accumulation in paddy rice (Oryza sativa) L

Muhammad Kashif Irshad et al.

Summary: This study found that the application of goethite-modified biochar (GB) significantly reduced the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in rice plants. GB amendment decreased the bioavailability of Cd and As in the soil, increased Fe-plaque formation on root surfaces, and altered the microbial community in the rice rhizosphere. The use of GB effectively improved the quality of rice grains and provided a valuable method to protect public health by mitigating the co-occurrence of Cd and As in paddy soils.

Stabilization of lead in polluted sediment based on an eco-friendly amendment strategy: Microenvironment response mechanism

Rui Deng et al.

Summary: Stabilization is crucial for remediating sediment-polluted heavy metals. This study investigated the microenvironmental response mechanisms after the gradual stabilization of Pb in sediment. An eco-friendly amendment strategy utilizing biodegradable sophorolipids showed improved efficiency in Pb stabilization and led to changes in dominant species, particularly Firmicutes, indicating successful stabilization of Pb. This research not only focuses on stabilizing Pb in sediment through eco-friendly methods, but also monitors microenvironmental responses during the stabilization process, laying the groundwork for future heavy metal amendment strategies in sediment environments.

Investigation of textile dyeing effluent using activated sludge system to assess the removal efficiency

Ahmed Malik et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) for treating real textile wastewater by evaluating the effect of different mixed liquid suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations on COD, TSS, and oil/grease removal.
