Clinical and demographic features of hidradenitis suppurativa: a multicentre study of 1221 patients with an analysis of risk factors associated with disease severity

Summary: This multicentre study investigated the demographic and clinical features of Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and determined risk factors of disease severity among 1221 patients from 29 centres. Male sex, involvement of the genitals, and inguinal region were found to be important determinants of disease severity, while comorbidity, longer disease duration, longer diagnosis delay, and a higher number of smoking pack-years were associated with more severe disease. The study provides insight into the variation in HS demographics and clinical features, contributing to a better understanding of the disease and its severity factors.

Full exome sequencing of 11 families with Hidradenitis suppurativa

Summary: The study identified mutations in the Notch pathway for all families, as well as mutations in the PSENEN and APH1B of the gamma-secretase genes. Additionally, 161 variants of unknown significance that segregated with the disease within these families were reported. The study concluded that HS is rarely caused by single-gene mutations, suggesting future genetic studies focus on genome-wide association with thousands of cases for suspected polygenic diseases.

Assessment of these symptoms should be thorough and included in the routine evaluation of HS patients to motivate treatment modifications and improve patient health.
