A review of rare earth elements and yttrium in coal ash: Content, modes of occurrences, combustion behavior, and extraction methods

Biao Fu et al.

Summary: This review critically summarizes recent progress in the study of REY in coal ash, evaluating the content, speciation, and extraction potentials of REY. It discusses the different forms, distribution behavior, and transformation mechanisms of REY in coal ash, and proposes possible retention mechanisms of REY by aluminosilicate glass at boiler temperature. The modification of REY speciation in fly ash by reactions with flue gas components and current extraction techniques for REY recovery from coal combustion ash are also highlighted.

Estimation of heavy and light rare earth elements of coal by intelligent methods

S. Chehreh Chelgani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between coal properties and rare earth elements, and utilized a new feature selection method to improve prediction performance. Results showed that specific coal subsets were effective for predicting HREE and LREE concentrations, and a boosted neural network model significantly reduced errors in prediction. The study suggested that this approach could be a potential tool for predicting complex problems in energy and fuel areas.

Modes of occurrence of elements in coal: A critical evaluation

Shifeng Dai et al.

Summary: Coal is a complex geological material containing various elements and minerals, with the modes of occurrence of elements playing a crucial role in coal mining, preparation, combustion, utilization, as well as environmental and health effects. Understanding the modes of occurrence is essential for extracting critical metals from coal or coal ash, and different coals may exhibit varying element occurrences based on geological conditions.

Characterization of rare earth elements present in coal ash by sequential extraction

Sungyoon Park et al.

Summary: This study examined the binding characteristics of REEs within coal ash and found that the majority of REEs are strongly bound in the residual fraction, requiring the use of strong acids for extraction. Additionally, it was discovered that a significant portion of REEs can be recovered from wastewaters produced during coal ash-derived zeolite synthesis.

Signatures of rare earth element distributions in fly ash derived from the combustion of Central Appalachian, Illinois, and Powder River basin coals

James C. Hower et al.

Summary: The distribution of Rare Earth elements (REE) in coal-derived fly ashes varies depending on the coal source and basins. Different coal types exhibit variations in REE concentration and distribution in fly ashes. The signature of REE in fly ashes can be indicative of their behavior in extraction processes, but the actual distribution may differ between fly ashes from different basins.

Redistribution and transformation mechanisms of gallium and germanium during coal combustion

Chuncai Zhou et al.

Summary: Gallium (Ga) and germanium (Ge) are strategically critical rare elements (CREs) with increasing demand for emerging energy-efficient technologies and high-tech applications. Understanding the redistribution behavior of Ga and Ge during combustion in coal is essential for the development of CREs enrichment and extraction technologies. Adding Si, Al, Na, and K-based compounds can enhance the redistribution of Ga and Ge to ash phases during high-temperature combustion, which shows potential for efficient capture of these CREs in future applications.

Metal-Containing Nanoparticles in Low-Rank Coal-Derived Fly Ash from China: Characterization and Implications toward Human Lung Toxicity

Jiayuan Wu et al.

Summary: Characterization of nanoparticles in coal fly ashes is crucial for understanding health risks from coal combustion. Iron and titanium-containing nanoparticles were identified as dominant, with potential to induce lung tissue damage if inhaled. The differences in NP content were regulated by coalification degree and combustion conditions, highlighting the importance of studying NPs in low-rank coal-derived fly ashes.

Distribution of rare earth elements in the pilot-scale processing of fly ashes derived from eastern Kentucky coals: Comparisons of the feed and processed ashes

James C. Hower et al.

Summary: Beneficiated fly ash from the combustion of Central Appalachian high volatile bituminous coals was extracted with HNO3 in a pilot-scale processing plant. The post-HNO3-extraction spent ash showed depleted major oxides and minor elements, with a significant reduction in total lanthanides, Y, and Sc concentration. Heavy rare earth elements and Y were disproportionately concentrated in the HNO3-leachate compared to light REE, while Sc did not partition between the feed and spent ashes. The spent ash + ordinary Portland cement mixes exhibited comparable compressive strength and strength activity indices to 100% OPC, indicating potential for commercial use as a Class F fly ash. Ultimately, the chemistry of the beneficiated ash influenced the composition of the post-HNO3-extraction spent ash and HNO3-leachate.

Lithium and redox-sensitive (Ge, U, Mo, V) element mineralization in the Pennsylvanian coals from the Huangtupo coalfield, Shanxi, northern China: With emphasis on the interaction of infiltrating seawater and exfiltrating groundwater

Panpan Xie et al.

Summary: The geochemistry of low-ash and medium-sulfur coal and non-coal horizons from the Huangtupo coalfield in Shanxi, northern China was investigated. The study found slight enrichments of uranium, molybdenum, and strontium in the Pennsylvanian Huangtupo coal, likely related to a marine invasion in the basin. Additionally, lithium enrichments in some coal benches in the Qinshui Basin could be promising for commercial Li recovery due to acidic groundwater factors.
