Organic geochemistry and petrology of Devonian shale in eastern Ohio: Implications for petroleum systems assessment

Paul C. Hackley et al.

Summary: Recent analysis of Upper Devonian Ohio Shale and Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale in eastern Ohio and nearby areas using organic petrography and geochemical techniques revealed that the organic matter primarily derived from marine algae and bacterial biomass. This indicates a correlation between oil sourced from Devonian reservoirs and organic matter in the Devonian shales, with potential implications for exploration and assessment of petroleum resources in the region.

Correlative nano-spectroscopic imaging of heterogeneity in migrated petroleum in unconventional reservoir pores

Rebekah E. Simon et al.

Summary: Low permeability unconventional oil and gas resources may experience formation damage due to the emplacement of viscous petroleum in narrow pore throats during petroleum migration and production. A new correlative imaging technique with high spatial resolution is demonstrated for migrated residual petroleum in nanopores of Niobrara chalk samples. Despite outstanding challenges, correlative IR s-SNOM and nano-mechanical imaging offer a promising and novel analytical approach to understanding fluid behavior in nanoporous reservoir rocks.
