Petrology and geochemistry of Devonian cutinitic liptobioliths from northwestern China

Daofu Song et al.

Summary: Liptobioliths in northwestern China are unique coal deposits with high cutinite content, likely formed by lycopsids during the Middle Devonian. The depositional conditions indicate freshwater environment and the enrichment of certain elements due to hydrothermal solutions.

Origin of the tuff parting and associated enrichments of Zr, REY, redox-sensitive and other elements in the Early Miocene coal of the Siniy Utyes Basin, southwestern Primorye, Russia

Victor P. Nechaev et al.

Summary: Miocene coal beds in the Siniy Utyes Basin, South Primirye, in eastern Russia, contain elevated concentrations of rare earth elements and other trace elements. These elements are sourced from weathered granites rather than volcanic ash layers. The presence of certain minerals in both the coal and volcanic ash suggests a post-depositional emplacement of these elements. The enrichment of elements in the coal proximal to the volcanic ash layers may be attributed to higher permeability and a geochemical barrier at the coal/volcanic ash interface.

Aspects of rare earth element geochemistry of the Pond Creek coalbed, Pike County, Kentucky

James C. Hower et al.

Summary: The chemistry of rare earth elements in Pond Creek coal in Pike County, Kentucky was examined, and it was found that their concentration and distribution varied significantly between lithotypes, possibly due to hydrothermal enrichment and geological movements.

Nitrogen isotopic compositions in NH4+-mineral-bearing coal: Origin and isotope fractionation

Panpan Xie et al.

Summary: Coals containing ammonium-bearing aluminosilicates are rich in critical elements. The nitrogen in these minerals likely originates from the decomposition of organic matter in coals under increased geothermal gradient from intrusions or hydrothermal fluids. The isotopic composition of nitrogen in the minerals and coals provides valuable insights into their formation and sources of critical elements.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of the Late Triassic coal from the Caotang mine, northeastern Sichuan Basin, China, with emphasis on the enrichment of the critical element lithium

Mingxuan Zhou et al.

Summary: Comprehensive research on the concentrations, modes of occurrence, and origin of critical elements in coal is significant from an economic point of view. This study found that Caotang coal in China has a high concentration of the critical element Li, typically 20 times higher than world and Chinese common coals, with chlorites as the dominant host. Geochemical indicators suggest that the source-area compositions of Caotang coals are felsic-intermediate igneous rocks from specific regions in China.

The Tarim Basin, China, a prospect for plume-related Zr(Hf)-Nb (Ta)-REY-Ga-U mineralization

Victor P. Nechaev et al.

Summary: This study compares the data from the Tarim and Emeishan Large Igneous Provinces to understand the potential for tuffaceous Zr(Hf)-Nb(Ta)-REY-Ga-U ores in the Tarim Basin. Positive indications include larger and more felsic deposits in the TLIP, while negative indicators are the influence of a semi-arid climate and the lack of organic matter in the Permian volcaniclastic strata. The Permian tuffaceous mudstones in the Tarim Basin may be a promising target for geochemical prospecting for similar ores found in southwestern China, as well as for REY-carbonate and U ores similar to those discovered in the Far Eastern Russia.
