A global review of socioeconomic and environmental impacts of ants reveals new insights for risk assessment

Monica A. M. Gruber et al.

Summary: Risk assessments are crucial for managing invasive species, and understanding the impacts of invasive species is essential for these assessments. Invasive ants are widespread and damaging, and a global assessment of their impacts has been conducted, resulting in a priority list of risk species.

Red imported fire ants cover the insecticide-treated surfaces with particles to reduce contact toxicity

Chao Wen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavioral responses of S. invicta workers to surfaces treated with insecticides, and finds that the ants can perform particle-covering behavior to reduce the toxicity of certain insecticides, which constitutes a unique insecticide-resistance strategy in ants.

Herbal plants as alternatives for the management of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta

Ching-Chu Tsai et al.

Summary: The red imported fire ant (RIFA) is a highly invasive species that poses threats to native ecosystems, human health, and economic activities worldwide. The intensive use of synthetic pesticides in Taiwan's quarantine zone has proven to be ineffective in preventing RIFA re-infestation. Therefore, finding eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives for RIFA control is urgently needed. This study investigated the efficacy of planting herbal species in controlling RIFA populations. The results showed that herbal plants, such as Tagetes lemmonii, Cymbopogon citratus, and Chrysopogon zizanioides, effectively repelled RIFA and can be considered as eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives for RIFA control.

Using essential oils from Citrus paradisi as a fumigant for Solenopsis invicta workers and evaluating the oils' effect on worker behavior

Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: Grapefruit essential oils, particularly the concentrated version, showed strong lethal fumigant effects against red imported fire ants. Among the compounds in the oils, octanal was found to be the most toxic to the ants, suppressing their walking and gripping abilities. The fumigant activity of grapefruit essential oils and their main compounds is associated with their effects on the behavior of workers, demonstrating their potential as an ecofriendly and safe control method for red imported fire ants.
