Identification of crucial circRNAs in skeletal muscle during chicken embryonic development

Pengfei Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, chicken leg muscles at 14 and 20-day embryo ages were collected from fast- and slow-growing groups for RNA-seq analysis, identifying 245 and 440 differentially expressed circRNAs in the comparison groups F14vsF20 and S14vsS20, respectively. GO enrichment analysis revealed that the host genes of DE circRNAs were related to growth processes, such as transcription regulation, metabolic processes, and myofibril assembly. Further analysis identified key host genes and circRNA-miRNA pairs involved in skeletal muscle development in chickens.

Regulation of myogenic gene expression

Cristina Vicente-Garcia et al.

Summary: The development and regeneration of skeletal muscle is controlled by various factors, including Myf5, MyoD, Mrf4, and MyoG, known as the myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs). These factors are expressed in a specific spatio-temporal manner, leading to functional and metabolic diversity among different muscle groups. This review discusses the regulation of MRFs and myogenic genes, including chromatin status, transcription competence, alternative splicing, and post-translational modifications. These processes are tightly coordinated to ensure proper activation, maintenance, and termination of myogenesis.

MEF2C shapes the microtranscriptome during differentiation of skeletal muscles

Agnieszka Piasecka et al.

Summary: MEF2C is a crucial regulator of microtranscriptome in muscle cells, impacting the composition and dynamics of miRNAs. Its depletion leads to both upregulation and downregulation of miRNAs, mainly driven by transcription efficiency. Additionally, MEF2C affects the 3'-end nucleotide addition of miRNAs and is involved in the stability and specificity of multiple miRNAs during muscle cell differentiation.
