Green and sustainable cellulose-based shape memory composites with excellent conductivity for temperature warning

Zhicheng Jiang et al.

Summary: Green and sustainable cellulose-based composites containing poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) with temperature-induced shape memory properties and conductivity performance were presented. The addition of PCL improved the mechanical properties of the composites and endowed them with excellent shape memory properties. The composites showed superior shape-fixing rate and fast recovery to their original shape, while also exhibiting stable conductivity under different bending angles and being successfully applied in the design of a temperature warning sensor.

Wood-Derived Hydrogels as a Platform for Drug-Release Systems

Mario Culebras et al.

Summary: Wood-based hydrogels containing cellulose and lignin were successfully developed as drug-release platforms. The viscoelastic and cross-linking properties of precursor solutions were adjusted to create highly porous hydrogel structures through freeze-drying. Variations in the lignin molecular structure significantly influenced the swelling and mechanical performance of the hydrogels, with organosolv-type lignin demonstrating optimal properties for drug release systems.

Facile Tailoring of Structures for Controlled Release of Paracetamol from Sustainable Lignin Derived Platforms

Mario Culebras et al.

Summary: The study successfully synthesized hydrogels using lignin, a non-valorized biopolymer, crosslinked with PEGDGE. The ratio of crosslinker used influenced the structural and chemical properties of the resulting hydrogels, with increased crosslinker amount leading to smaller pore size and higher swelling capacity. Paracetamol release test showed higher drug diffusion for hydrogels produced with a lignin:PEGDGE ratio of 1:1.

Guidelines for performing lignin-first biorefining

Mahdi M. Abu-Omar et al.

Summary: The valorisation of lignin is crucial for the economic viability of the lignocellulosic biorefining industry. The lignin-first biorefining approach, which considers lignin valorisation in the design phase, has been shown to make the fullest use of lignocellulose. Despite the diverse approaches to reporting and analyzing results from lignin-first methods, we propose guidelines for analyzing critical data in order to facilitate direct comparisons between studies.
