A novel nitrogen-doped porous carbon derived from black liquor for efficient removal of Cr(VI) and tetracycline: Comparison with lignin porous carbon

Yuxin Tian et al.

Summary: The direct preparation of adsorption materials from black liquor has great potential in wastewater treatment. The nitrogen-doped porous carbon synthesized showed superior adsorption performance for tetracycline compared to purified lignin-based carbon. The improved adsorption performance was attributed to pore-filling effect, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and 7C-7C electron-donor-receptor. There was little difference in the adsorption performance of the two carbons for Cr(VI), and both exhibited excellent anti-interference property.

Industrial lignins: the potential for efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: Industrial lignins, especially pulping black liquor lignin, show promising adsorption performance for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. The adsorption process is primarily chemisorption, leading to the reduction of toxic Cr(VI) to less harmful Cr(III). This research provides potential for the effective utilization of industrial lignins in wastewater treatment.

Summary: Lignin-sulfonate-based biosorbents, specifically lignosulfonate/N-butylaniline (LS-NBA) hollow microspheres, have been successfully fabricated for the removal of hazardous Cr(VI). The LS-NBA showed significant adsorption capacity and proved effective in real industrial wastewater treatment, bringing the residual concentration of Cr(VI) below the recommended limit for drinking water.

One-step hydrothermal carbonization of amine modified black liquor and lignin for efficient Cr(VI) adsorption

Yuxin Tian et al.

Summary: Amine modified black liquor (BL) and purified lignin (PL) derived biochar were successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) with hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). The physico-chemical properties of biochar were characterized using various analytical techniques. The adsorption performance of biochar was systematically investigated, and the effects of experimental parameters such as initial concentration of pollutant, contact time, solution pH, and coexisting ions were studied. The study found significant differences in the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) on biochar prepared by BL and PL under the optimal hydrothermal temperature. Amine modification enhanced the adsorption performance of biochar, especially for PL biochar. The results showed the potential of amine-modified BL biochar for the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Acidification of potassium bismuthate for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation ability: An effective strategy for regulating the abilities of adsorption, oxidation, and photocatalysis

Weidong Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and effective strategy involving HNO3 acidification was proposed to enhance the degradation ability of potassium bismuthate for methylene blue. The acidified KBiO3 showed significantly improved photocatalytic performance and enhanced generation of singlet oxygen, leading to enhanced oxidation degradation of MB under light conditions. Additionally, the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes was notably increased, indicating the enhanced photocatalytic ability of KBiO3.
