Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Minimizing treatment-induced emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacterial infections

Mathew Stracy et al.

Summary: Currently, the treatment of bacterial infections focuses on choosing antibiotics based on the susceptibility of the pathogen, but there is less attention given to the risk of treatment-induced resistance. By using genomic sequencing and machine learning analysis, it is possible to predict and minimize the emergence of resistance at the individual-patient level.

Deep learning model for prediction of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production in community-onset Enterobacteriaceae bacteraemia from a high ESBL prevalence multi-centre cohort

Alfred Lok Hang Lee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 5625 patients with community-onset bacteraemia caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, and Proteus mirabilis in three regional hospitals in Hong Kong from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2019, finding an ESBL-producing prevalence of 23.7%. Deep neural network outperformed logistic regression in predicting ESBL production.

Effect of a Predictive Model on Planned Surgical Duration Accuracy, Patient Wait Time, and Use of Presurgical Resources: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Christopher T. Stromblad et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy and real-world outcome of implementing a machine learning model to predict surgical case duration through a randomized clinical trial. The patients assigned to the machine learning algorithm had significantly lower errors in predicting surgical duration compared to the control group, leading to reduced patient wait time and improved presurgical resource use. The implementation of machine learning-generated predictions did not increase surgeon wait time between cases, indicating potential benefits for both patients and resources.
