An improved first order approximate reliability analysis method for uncertain structures based on evidence theory

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, an improved first order approximate reliability analysis method based on evidence theory is developed to evaluate the uncertain structures reliability. The uncertain variables are described using frame of discernment (FD) and basic probability assignment (BPA). The improved HL-RF method and Newton method are used to solve the most possible point (MPP) and bound points, respectively. The limit-state functions are approximated by first order Taylor series, and extremum analysis is performed to solve the reliability measure indexes.

Inferences for stress-strength reliability of Burr Type X distributions based on ranked set sampling

Fatma Gul Akgul et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the point and interval estimation of stress-strength reliability based on ranked set sampling when stress and strength follow independent Burr Type X distributions. For point estimation, we derive the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator using iterative methods and also provide an explicit estimator as an alternative to the ML methodology using Mehrotra and Nanda's modified maximum likelihood technique. In terms of interval estimation, we construct the asymptotic confidence interval and bootstrap confidence intervals using two different resampling methods. The performance of the proposed estimators is compared with simple random sampling counterparts, and a real data set from an agricultural experiment is used for implementation illustration.

Pan Wang et al.

Summary: This work proposes a new computational method based on the classical active learning Kriging model with U learning function for reliability analysis with imprecise probability distributions. The method can accurately predict failure probability and sensitivity within the variation range of distribution parameters, and avoid the reconstruction of Kriging models. Validation through investigation of multiple examples confirms the reasonability and superiority of the proposed method.

Summary: Probability estimation of rare events is a challenging task in reliability theory. Subset simulation (SS) is a robust simulation technique that efficiently approximates rare events by transforming them into multiple intermediate failure events. Different seed selection approaches inspired by genetic algorithms and particle filters were studied to improve the accuracy of SS, with results showing promising performance in finding proper failure sets, especially in problems with multiple failure domains.
