FFT-based homogenization at finite strains using composite boxels (ComBo)

Sanath Keshav et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new local coarse-graining technique called composite boxels (ComBo) for scale-bridging simulations. By condensing fine-scale voxels into a laminate model, the computational efficiency of the simulations is improved. Additionally, an image-based normal detection algorithm is implemented to enhance the accuracy of the simulation results.

Adaptation and validation of FFT methods for homogenization of lattice based materials

S. Lucarini et al.

Summary: An FFT framework suitable for lattice based materials is proposed and evaluated for its performance compared to FEM solutions. The adapted Galerkin approach combined with Voigt surface smoothening was found to be the best FFT framework in terms of accuracy, numerical efficiency, and h-convergence. FFT becomes competitive with FEM in terms of numerical efficiency for cells with relative densities above approximately 7%.

A novel adaptive mesh refinement scheme for the simulation of phase-field fracture using trimmed hexahedral meshes

Ho Young Kim et al.

Summary: The article introduces a novel adaptive mesh refinement scheme using trimmed hexahedral (TH) meshes to simulate phase-field fracture in brittle materials. By employing a multithreshold criterion and developing shape functions for transition TH elements, the scheme can accurately capture the evolution of the damage phase field.

On non-stationary polarization methods in FFT-based computational micromechanics

Matti Schneider

Summary: Polarization-type methods are fast solution methods for FFT-based computational micromechanics, but their performance depends on the choice of the reference material, known optimal-selection strategies only exist for finitely contrasted materials. This study focuses on adaptive strategies for choosing the reference material and introduces a suitable convergence criterion for fair comparison with other solvers.

Fast Fourier transform based homogenization with mixed uniform boundary conditions

Hannes Grimm-Strele et al.

Summary: The FFT-based homogenization method is established as a fast, accurate, and robust tool for periodic homogenization in solid mechanics. The implementation of nonperiodic boundary conditions efficiently reduces runtime and memory requirements compared to the domain mirroring approach. The use of periodic boundary conditions for nonperiodic geometries yields vastly different results than with PMUBC, and the influence of the discretization method on the results is examined.
