Does omega-3 PUFA-enriched oral nutritional intervention benefit cancer patients receiving chemo (radio) therapy? A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Yandan Wang et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of omega-3 PUFA-enriched oral nutritional supplements on nutritional status and clinical outcomes in cancer patients undergoing chemo (radio) therapy. The results showed that these supplements can significantly increase body weight and BMI, elevate plasma levels of omega-3 fatty acids, reduce inflammatory indicators and the incidence of adverse events, but have no effect on plasma albumin levels.

Summary: The supplementation of n-3 fatty acids can reduce the inflammatory state in women with PCOS by decreasing hs-CRP and increasing adiponectin levels. No statistically significant results were found for other markers such as visfatin, nitric oxide, GSH, malondialdehyde levels, or total antioxidant capacity.

Summary: Autophagy pathways are involved in the pathogenesis of some obesity related health problems. PPAR-gamma as the main modulator of adipogenesis process can be effective in regulating obesity related phenotypes. The effects of PPAR-gamma and its agonists on autophagy modulation in obesity have been investigated in a limited number of studies.

Effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids supplements on psychopathology and metabolic parameters in schizophrenia: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Kah K. Goh et al.

Summary: The study found that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid augmentation significantly improves symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, especially general psychopathology and positive symptoms. It showed significant improvement in severely ill patients who received omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids containing eicosapentaenoic acid >1 g/d. Additionally, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements have a positive effect on serum triglycerides.
