Tectonostratigraphy of the Merida Massif reveals a new Cadomian suture zone exposure in Gondwana (SW Iberia)

Ruben Diez Fernandez et al.

Summary: The Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic rocks of the Merida Massif in SW Iberia have been grouped into tectonostratigraphic units, separated by crustal-scale thrusts and/or extensional detachments. This tectonic setting was formed during the Cadomian Orogeny and later modified by the Variscan Orogeny, resulting in the juxtaposition of different units and the formation of folds and thrusts. The Merida Ophiolite represents a Cadomian suture zone exposure in the Gondwanan realm, reflecting inland transference of allochthonous terranes onto mainland Gondwana during different geological periods.

U-Pb geochronology and isotopic geochemistry of adakites and related magmas in the Ediacaran arc section of the SW Iberian Massif: The role of subduction erosion cycles in peri-Gondwanan arcs

Esther Rojo-Perez et al.

Summary: In the SW region of the Iberian Massif, changes in the subduction angle, subduction rate, mantle sources, and crustal materials have a recognizable cyclicality in the peri-Gondwanan Ediacaran arc section. Through geochronology, geochemistry, and isotopic sources, these changes can be traced in the magmatic bodies. The study highlights the importance of subduction erosion mechanisms in the peri-Gondwana margin during the Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian times.

A unique blueschist facies metapelite with Mg-rich chloritoid from the Badajoz-Cordoba Unit (SW Iberian Massif): correlation of Late Devonian high-pressure belts along the Variscan Orogen

R. Arenas et al.

Summary: The Badajoz-Cordoba Unit is a Variscan high-P unit mainly composed of metapelites, metagreywackes, orthogneisses, Grt-amphibolites, and retrogressed eclogites. The unit underwent high-P metamorphism at around 377 Ma, forming rare metapelites with well-preserved high-P mineral assemblages. Pseudosection modelling suggests formation in blueschist facies under high pressure conditions, followed by exhumation and moderate heating, similar to other units in the Variscan Orogen.

Geochemistry and Sm-Nd isotopic sources of Late Ediacaran siliciclastic series in the Ossa-Morena Complex: Iberian-Bohemian correlations

Esther Rojo-Perez et al.

Summary: The Cadomian basement in central and southern Europe is made up of Ediacaran-Early Cambrian sequences that are fragmented along the Variscan Orogen. The southwestern Iberian Massif contains well-preserved Cadomian basement strata that show deposition in back-arc or fore-arc settings. Isotopic data suggest a common source for the Cadomian basement in southwestern Iberia and North Bohemia, located near the periphery of the West African Craton, indicating a peri-Gondwanan connection during the Ediacaran period.

Tectonic setting and isotopic sources (Sm-Nd) of the SW Iberian Autochthon (Variscan Orogen)

Jose Manuel Fuenlabrada et al.

Summary: The metasedimentary rock successions in the Sierra Albarrana Group in SW Iberia were deposited in the Early Paleozoic period under the influence of the evolution of a peri-Gondwanan active margin. Their geochemical and isotopic characteristics suggest a significant contribution of reworked materials from old continental sources, indicating the tectonic activities and sedimentary environment during the early stages of the formation.

Secular variations of magma source compositions in the North Patagonian batholith from the Jurassic to Tertiary: Was melange melting involved?

Antonio Castro et al.

Summary: The study of Sr-Nd initial isotopic ratios of plutons from the North Patagonian batholith provides insights into a 180 million-year secular evolution involving magma sources and changes in tectonic regime. The results suggest that source composition was influenced by the incorporation of various crustal materials and trench sediments, leading to the generation of batholith magma during periods of fast convergence and high obliquity between plates. The model proposed in the study explains the geochemical variations of Andean batholiths and addresses the absence of ultramafic cumulates in the lower arc crust and continental crust.

Tracking the Late Devonian high-P metamorphic belt in the Variscan Orogen: New constraints on the PT evolution of eclogites from the Cubito-Moura Unit (SW Iberian Massif)

Irene Novo-Fernandez et al.

Summary: The Cubito-Moura Unit is a high-P metamorphic succession in the southern Ossa-Morena Complex, affected by a high-P, low to intermediate-T metamorphic event during Late Devonian times. The lithostratigraphy and tectonothermal evolution of this unit are similar to other units in the Iberian, Armorican and Bohemian massifs, forming a single Late Devonian high-P, low to intermediate-T metamorphic belt during the Variscan Orogeny.
