Patient record assessment of results and related resources spent during 1 year after initiation of root canal treatment in a Swedish public dental organization

Emma Wigsten et al.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment outcomes and related resources for patients undergoing root canal treatment (RCT) in public dental clinics in Sweden. The results showed that nearly 30% of teeth did not have their root canals filled within 12 months, and about half of these teeth were extracted. The outcomes for molar endodontic treatment were particularly concerning.

Endodontic inflammatory disease: A risk indicator for a first myocardial infarction

Dan Sebring et al.

Summary: The study found that patients who had experienced a first myocardial infarction had more decayed and missing teeth compared to healthy controls. The number of missing teeth was associated with an increased risk of a first MI, while decay-free and filled teeth were associated with decreased risk.

Tooth survival following root canal treatment by general dental practitioners in a Swedish county - a 10-year follow-up study of a historical cohort

S. Kebke et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the 10-year survival rate of root filled teeth treated by general dental practitioners and identified possible prognostic factors for tooth extraction. The mean incidence of tooth loss over the first 10 years after completion of root canal treatment performed by a GDP was approximately 2% per year. No significant prognostic factors could be identified.

The global prevalence of apical periodontitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

C. S. Tiburcio-Machado et al.

Summary: Half of the adult population worldwide have at least one tooth with apical periodontitis. The prevalence of AP is greater in samples from the dental care services, but it is also high amongst community representative samples from the general population. The present findings should bring the attention of health policymakers, medical and dental communities to the hidden burden of endodontic disease in the population worldwide.

Association between dental factors and mortality

J. M. Liljestrand et al.

Summary: The study found an inverse association between the number of missing teeth and the use of removable dentures, root canal fillings, and apical rarefactions with mortality rates for both cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Professional interventions such as root canal fillings and removable dentures were associated with improved survival, suggesting the importance of dental healthcare services in overall health outcomes.

Factors Associated with Extraction following Root Canal Filling in Adults

H. Fransson et al.

Summary: The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with extractions within 5 years after root fillings in the adult Swedish population. Various individual- and tooth-specific variables were found to be associated with extractions, with restoration type and composite restorations showing high odds ratios for extractions. Further research is needed to understand the reasons for extractions.

Patient satisfaction with root canal treatment and outcomes in the Swedish public dental health service: A prospective cohort study

Emma Wigsten et al.

Summary: The study aimed to document satisfaction with root canal treatment procedures and outcomes among patients treated at Swedish public dental clinics. Results showed that patient satisfaction was high one to three years after beginning the treatment, despite some patients experiencing persistent pain and incomplete treatment. The reliability of the patients' responses was considered good, suggesting a need for further clinical observational studies in general dental practice.

Survival rate after endodontic treatment in general dentistry for cracked teeth with different coronal restorations

Winnie Nguyen Thi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the survival rate of cracked teeth after endodontic treatment, comparing composite filling/crown and full crown restorations. The overall survival rate for cracked teeth was 68% after 5 years, indicating that cracked teeth restored with a full crown had a significantly higher survival rate of 97%. The results suggest that cracked teeth should be restored with a full crown after endodontic treatment.
