Experimental study on the electrohydrodynamic deformation of droplets in a combined DC electric field and shear flow field

Xiangdong Liu et al.

Summary: The electrohydrodynamic deformation of droplets in a combined DC electric field and shear flow field was investigated through a visualization experiment. Detailed experimental data on both the transient and steady droplet deformation parameters and orientations were provided under different electric field and shear flow field combinations. The internal flow characteristics of the deformed droplet were also examined. The experimental results showed that the response of the droplet is faster than its deformation parameter when an electric field is combined with a shear flow. Additionally, an asymmetric vortex forms inside the deformed droplet in the combined fields.

Effects of wall temperature and temperature-dependent viscosity on maximum spreading of water-in-oil emulsion droplet

Maxim Piskunov et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the spreading dynamics of droplets in n-decane and water-in-oil emulsions stabilized by different nonionic surfactants. The research identifies five hydrodynamic outcomes of droplet impact on a heated surface and proposes a universal empirical model for maximum droplet spreading diameter. The model takes into account temperature-dependent dynamic viscosity, surface tension, and explicit impact surface temperature term. The findings have significant implications for modeling fuel-air mixture formation in combustion chambers.

Continuous High-Throughput Fabrication of Architected Micromaterials via In-Air Photopolymerization

Jieke Jiang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates in-air polymerization of liquid jets as a novel platform to produce microparticles and microfibers with tunable size, shape, and composition at high throughput; the size, morphology, and local chemistry of micromaterials can be independently controlled, enabling rapid fabrication of stimuli-responsive Janus fibers and high-throughput printing of microlenses; this combination of rapid processing and tunability opens a new route toward applications of tailored micromaterials in various fields.

Convective heat transfer in droplets of fuel microemulsions during conductive heating

Nikita Khomutov et al.

Summary: The experimental findings present the convective heat transfer in drops and films of fuel microemulsions heated on hot surfaces, analyzing features and characteristics of vaporization and coalescence of the dispersed phase of microemulsions using optical microscopy. The results show that the evaporation rate of the dispersed phase largely depends on the emulsifier and distilled water concentration, with droplet size decreasing linearly with temperature below 80 degrees C and increasing above 80 degrees C. The number of large coalesced droplets decreases linearly with time, more intensively at surface temperatures above 80 degrees C.

Summary: The study investigates secondary atomization resulting from the impact of a water-in-oil emulsion drop on a hot sapphire glass surface. It demonstrates that higher emulsion concentrations significantly reduce the size of secondary droplets.

Effect of rheology and interfacial tension on spreading of emulsion drops impacting a solid surface

M. Piskunov et al.

Summary: This study presents an experimental and theoretical investigation of Newtonian and non-Newtonian emulsion drop impact on a solid surface, revealing that existing models underestimate experimental data. The inclusion of capillary effects and careful consideration of rheological properties for Bingham plastic fluids are shown to be important. Modified models provide good agreement with measured data, highlighting the need for further research on the behavior of compound liquid drops impacting solid surfaces.
