One-Step versus Two-Step Valence Tautomeric Transitions in Tetraoxolene-Bridged Dinuclear Cobalt Compounds

Jia-Ping Wang et al.

Summary: The synthesis of valence tautomeric compounds with multistep transitions using new redox-active ligands is the main focus of this research. By developing a redox-active tetraoxolene ligand, a pair of dinuclear compounds were successfully synthesized and their one-step or rare two-step valence tautomeric transitions were studied through magnetic susceptibilities and X-ray diffraction measurements. The DFT calculation results are consistent with the experimental data, revealing the correlation between thermodynamic parameters and the valence tautomeric behaviors.

A Convenient DFT-Based Strategy for Predicting Transition Temperatures of Valence Tautomeric Molecular Switches

Jett T. Janetzki et al.

Summary: The study has developed a simple computational strategy for accurately predicting T-1/2 values of valence tautomeric complexes, with a focus on the role of diimine ligands in tuning T-1/2 values through pi-acceptance. Experimental data showed an excellent correlation between T-1/2 values for [Co(dbdiox)(dbsq)(N2L)] complexes and the calculated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy of the corresponding diimine ligand, with an average error of only 3.7%. This quantitative and simple DFT strategy allows for rapid identification and prediction of transition temperatures for proposed VT complexes.

Room temperature conductance switching in a molecular iron(iii) spin crossover junction

Senthil Kumar Karuppannan et al.

Summary: This study reports the first room temperature switchable Fe(iii) molecular spin crossover tunnel junction, constructed from self-assembled molecules on graphene surfaces with conductance switching associated with the high and low spin states. Analysis reveals coherent tunnelling dominates charge transport across the molecule, and the SCO complex retains its functionality on the surface, indicating van der Waals molecule-electrode interfaces provide good junction stability while retaining SCO switching capability.
