Heteroanionic Melilite Oxysulfide: A Promising Infrared Nonlinear Optical Candidate with a Strong Second-Harmonic Generation Response, Sufficient Birefringence, and Wide Bandgap

Ruiqi Wang et al.

Summary: This study confirmed that the heteroanionic oxysulfide tetrahedron can achieve balanced performance in infrared nonlinear optical crystals, including strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, proper birefringence, and wide band gap. The anion-mixing strategy was applied to discover melilite oxysulfide as a promising IR-NLO material system. These compounds exhibited unbiased performances of proper birefringences, strong SHG responses with phase-matchable ability, wide band gaps, and large laser-induced damage thresholds. The structure tolerance of melilite offers the possibility to improve the SHG response by tuning the orbital composition and hybridization near band edges.

From oxides to oxysulfides: the mixed-anion GeS3O unit induces huge improvement in the nonlinear optical effect and optical anisotropy for potential nonlinear optical materials

Xinyu Tian et al.

Summary: This article proposes oxysulfides as potential infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials that combine the performance advantages of sulfides and oxides. The study shows that GeS3O units in oxysulfides exhibit stronger polarizability anisotropy and hyperpolarizability compared to typical GeO4 units. The research also demonstrates that the mixed-anion GeS3O ligand is a useful NLO-active unit that greatly influences the NLO origin. This provides a feasible design strategy and research system for exploring new IR NLO candidates.

Broad transparency and wide band gap achieved in a magnetic infrared nonlinear optical chalcogenide by suppressing d-d transitions

Bin-Wen Liu et al.

Summary: Magnetic infrared nonlinear optical materials, particularly those with d-block metals, have shown potential for large NLO efficiency. However, the d-d transitions in these materials lead to optical absorption and narrow band gaps, limiting their practical applications. The use of salt-inclusion systems provides an opportunity to modulate the crystal field and suppress the d-d transitions while maintaining NLO-active transitions. The newly developed salt-inclusion sulfide [K3Cl][Mn2Ga6S12] features a rare nanoporous framework, wide band gap, and broad transparency, meeting the criteria for an advanced infrared NLO material.
