Digestive Health in Sexual and Gender Minority Populations

Christopher Velez et al.

Summary: It has been over 50 years since the Stonewall Inn Riots, a crucial event for the LGBTQI+ rights movement. However, discrimination against sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals still persists. SGM communities face higher rates of various health issues, including sexually transmitted infections, substance abuse, mental health conditions, obesity, and certain cancers. Transgender patients, especially those of color, are more likely to experience healthcare discrimination and lack of insurance. SGM individuals also have a higher risk of exposure to emotional, physical, and sexual trauma. This review aims to raise awareness about the effects of discrimination and social determinants of health on SGM communities' access to healthcare and digestive health, and to emphasize the need for more research in this area.

A Call for LGBTQ Content in Graduate Medical Education Program Requirements

Andrew M. Pregnall et al.

Summary: A well-established body of literature shows that LGBTQ individuals experience worse health outcomes and care experiences compared to straight/cisgender individuals. Reforms in medical education have focused on undergraduate programs but lag behind in graduate medical education. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has recently implemented requirements for residents to show respect and responsiveness to diverse populations, signaling the need for LGBTQ-specific training requirements.

'These Discussions Aren't Happening': Experiences of People Living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Talking About Sexual Well-being with Health Care Professionals

Simona Fourie et al.

Summary: There is little research on discussions between inflammatory bowel disease patients and healthcare professionals about sexual well-being issues. While participants expressed a desire for such conversations, they often faced barriers. Negative experiences were reported by those who had discussed sexual well-being issues. The study highlights the need for healthcare professionals to pay more attention to patient needs and preferences related to sexual well-being issues.

Gay and Bisexual Men in the US Lack Basic Information About Anal Cancer

Christopher W. Wheldon et al.

Summary: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men are generally unaware that HPV can cause anal cancer, with only a small subset of college-educated individuals having knowledge of this association. Targeted anal cancer education programs are necessary to increase awareness among at-risk populations.
