Chloroplast phylogenomics in Camelina (Brassicaceae) reveals multiple origins of polyploid species and the maternal lineage of C. sativa

Jordan R. Brock et al.

Summary: This study reveals the maternal contributors of polyploid Camelina lineages by sequencing and analyzing chloroplast genomes. The study shows minimal divergence in the genus's chloroplast genomes, with no gene loss or structural variation observed. The researchers also discovered that the tetraploid Camelina evolved through multiple independent hybridization events, and the polyploid lineages closely related to C. sativa emerged around 65 thousand years ago. Chromosome counts confirmed the variation in ploidy and cytotypes within C. microcarpa. Overall, this study provides insights into the hybridization and polyploidization history of Camelina.

High population density of bee pollinators increasing Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz seed yield: Implications on the potential risk for insect-mediated gene flow

Chuan-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Research shows that bees can enhance seed yield of Camelina sativa through pollination. Additionally, insects have the ability to transfer Camelina sativa pollen to adjacent flowers of other species, raising concerns about the spread of transgenes in the ecosystem. Therefore, there is a need to develop management strategies to reduce gene flow and promote the coexistence of genetically engineered and non-genetically engineered Camelina sativa in natural agroecosystems.

Camelina seed yield and quality in different growing environments in northern China

Chuan-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Camelina is a suitable oilseed crop for northern China, with a relatively short growing cycle and high seed yield. The oil from camelina contains various polyunsaturated fatty acids, including DHA commonly found in aquatic ecosystems, making it an attractive crop for its unique fatty acid composition.

Hourly pollen dispersal of Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz under different weather conditions and mitigation of wind-blown pollen dispersal using maize barrier

Chuan-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study highlights the potential impact and characteristics of pollen-mediated gene flow, as well as the importance of biocontainment strategies; the results demonstrate the variability of Camelina sativa pollen in relation to time, distance, and weather conditions, providing valuable information for predicting transgene flow.
