Ferric chloride aided peracetic acid pretreatment for effective utilization of sugarcane bagasse

Jingshun Zhuang et al.

Summary: The synergetic effects of ferric chloride aided peracetic acid (FPA) pretreatment were investigated to enhance total biomass utilization. The pretreated sugarcane bagasse showed high cellulose conversion and high-quality lignin production.

Enhanced production of butanol and xylosaccharides from Eucalyptus grandis wood using steam explosion in a semi-continuous pre-pilot reactor

Florencia Cebreiros et al.

Summary: This study investigated the co-production of xylosaccharides and butanol from Eucalyptus grandis wood using steam explosion pretreatment. Steam explosion led to high xylan recovery as xylooligosaccharides and achieved efficient glucan enzymatic hydrolysis. Strains Clostridium beijerinckii DSM 6422 and Clostridium beijerinckii DSM 6423 were identified as robust native strains for butanol production from lignocellulosic materials in this study.

Insights into bamboo delignification with acidic deep eutectic solvents pretreatment for enhanced lignin fractionation and valorization

Wen-Xin Li et al.

Summary: An acidic biomass-derived DES pretreatment was developed to enhance lignin fractionation from bamboo, resulting in lignin samples with higher thermal stability and excellent antioxidant activity. The use of acidic DES as a low-cost, high-performance delignification method with long-term durability and thermal stability is highlighted for potential applications in lignin-based chemicals and materials.

Improved hydrolysis yields and silica recovery by design of experiments applied to acid-alkali pretreatment in rice husks

Bruna R. Moreira et al.

Summary: This study optimized a two-step pretreatment method for rice husks using acid and alkali, with the best conditions identified through a fractional factorial design and central composite design. It was found that NaOH mainly extracts silica from rice husks, while H2SO4 plays a crucial role in lignin removal.

Natural surfactant-aided dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment of waste wheat straw to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency

Wei Tang et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel biorefinery method for waste wheat straw, in which a natural surfactant humic acid was used during acidic pretreatment to enhance enzymatic saccharification efficiency. The success of enzymatic digestion was attributed to improved accessibility of cellulose to cellulase and structural changes in lignocellulose. These findings suggest that humic acid may be a beneficial surfactant in biorefinery processes and could potentially inspire research into other natural surfactants.

Fractionation of Poplar Wood Using a Bifunctional Aromatic Acid under Mild Conditions

Duo He et al.

Summary: The study introduced a mild-condition fractionation process based on 4-Cl-BSA, which effectively extracted lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose sugars from lignocellulose while maintaining their high quality. Results indicated that 4-Cl-BSA performed well in fractionating and preserving the beta-O-4 linkages and aromatic units of lignin.

Co-production of fermentable glucose, xylose equivalents, and HBS-lignin from sugarcane bagasse through a FeCl3-catalyzed EG/H2O pretreatment

Weiqi Wei et al.

Summary: The FeCl3-EG/H2O pretreatment method developed in this study showed excellent selectivity in removing hemicellulose and lignin from sugarcane bagasse, resulting in high cellulose content and glucose yield after enzymatic hydrolysis. The method significantly improved the enzymatic digestibility of sugarcane bagasse and showed potential for hierarchical conversion and utilization of the biomass.

One-step peracetic acid pretreatment of hardwood and softwood biomass for platform chemicals production

Chandan Kundu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that thermally-assisted peracetic acid pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass effectively removes lignin with negligible loss of carbohydrates, achieving a 90% delignification rate. It significantly improves biomass digestibility, increasing glucan content, especially when conducted under mild temperature conditions.

Role of peracetic acid on the disruption of lignin packing structure and its consequence on lignin depolymerisation

Ruoshui Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the oxidative depolymerisation mechanism of lignin by PAA, revealing that PAA initiates oxygen insertion to the lignin macromolecule resulting in disruption of its packing structures and facilitates depolymerisation. The predominant reaction pathway for the oxidative depolymerisation of lignin with PAA was found to be the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The research also explored various metal oxide and mixed metal oxide catalysts to enhance the efficiency of PAA-mediated depolymerisation of lignin.
