High strength and multifunctional polyurethane film incorporated with lignin nanoparticles

Liran Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, lignin nanoparticle (LNP) derived from wheat straw pulping process waste stream was used as a nano filler to enhance the strength and elongation of polyurethane (PU) film. The well distributed LNP improved the mechanical properties of the film by acting as a lubricating agent and forming additional hydrogen bonds. The incorporation of LNP not only increased the tensile strength and elongation at break of the PU film, but also endowed it with hydrophobicity, anti-ultraviolet, and better hydrothermal stability.

Innovative production of lignin nanoparticles using deep eutectic solvents for multifunctional nanocomposites

Tong Luo et al.

Summary: A green and simple lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) production strategy was developed using deep eutectic solvents (DES), forming uniform size and spherical LNPs from corncob alkali lignin. Incorporating LNPs into biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix resulted in nanocomposite films with excellent mechanical properties, UV-blocking, hydrophobicity, and thermal stability. This study not only advances lignin-based nanotechnology by DES, but also opens up possibilities for using PVA polymer composites as food and medical packaging materials.
