Summary: This study developed a closed-circuit biorefinery process for complete conversion of lignocellulose into ethanol, biogas, and organic fertilizer. The efficiency of subcritical water pretreatment and ethanol conversion was reduced during reuse of waste for biogas and fertilizer production. The yields of ethanol, biogas, and organic fertilizer were verified through mass balance. Hidden problems in the pilot-scale conversion process were identified, and strategies for optimizing the biorefinery process in the future were provided.

Co-fermentation of immobilized yeasts boosted bioethanol production from pretreated cotton stalk lignocellulosic biomass: Long-term investigation

Kamran Malik et al.

Summary: This study focused on decomposing lignocellulosic biomass into monosaccharides using chemical and biological pretreatments, followed by long-term fermentation/co-fermentation for bioethanol production. Results showed high sugar utilization efficiency and bioethanol yield in the first cycle, but a decline in bioethanol production in subsequent cycles. The use of immobilized yeasts for co-fermentation was effective in improving bioethanol production from pretreated lignocellulosic biomass.

Challenges in cellulase bioprocess for biofuel applications

Reeta Rani Singhania et al.

Summary: The increasing population and industrialization have led to a higher demand for liquid fossil fuels, resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions. Bioethanol, produced from lignocellulosic biomass through enzymes, is considered a potential alternative to fossil fuels. Cellulases have been identified as the limiting factor for bioethanol production, but advances in bioprocesses have significantly reduced their cost, making bioethanol production cost-effective.
