Plant flavonoids: Classification, distribution, biosynthesis, and antioxidant activity

Nan Shen et al.

Summary: Flavonoids are natural polyphenol substances abundant in various plant-based foods. They have significant biological activities in both plants and humans, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, research on their distribution, biosynthesis, and health benefits remains limited. Future opportunities in flavonoid research include biotechnology, therapeutic phytoproducts, and exploring dietary flavonoid bioavailability.

Systematic Identification and Expression Analysis of the Auxin Response Factor (ARF) Gene Family in Ginkgo biloba L.

Fangyun Guo et al.

Summary: Auxin response factors (ARFs) are important transcription factors that mediate downstream auxin signaling by binding to auxin-responsive genes' promoters. In this study, 15 putative GbARF members were identified in Ginkgo biloba through comprehensive bioinformatics. The study revealed the important transcriptional activation roles of GbARF10b and GbARF10a in Ginkgo male flower development. The expansion of GbARFs mainly occurred through segmental duplication and most GbARFs have undergone purifying selection. These findings provide a new research basis for exploring the roles of GbARF members in floral organ development and hormone response in Ginkgo.

sRNAanno-a database repository of uniformly annotated small RNAs in plants

Chengjie Chen et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively annotated small RNAs in 143 plant species with fully sequenced genomes and publicly available sRNA data, providing a valuable resource for genomic and genetic research on plant small RNAs. The sRNAanno database offers more complete and reliable miRNA annotations compared to other public plant sRNA databases, as well as genomic information on PHAS loci and hc-siRNA loci from these plant species.

Involvement of the R2R3-MYB transcription factor MYB21 and its homologs in regulating flavonol accumulation in Arabidopsis stamen

Xueying Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that MYB21 and its homologs MYB24 and MYB57 promote flavonol biosynthesis and have a significant role in regulating pollen fertility. By directly affecting the expression of the FLS1 gene, MYB21 plays a crucial role in flavonol biosynthesis and can rescue stamen defects in genetic mutants by treatment with kaempferol or overexpression of FLS1.

Functional characterization of two chalcone isomerase (CHI) revealing their responsibility for anthocyanins accumulation in mulberry

Nan Chao et al.

Summary: The study identified CHIs from different Morus species with varying catalytic efficiencies for anthocyanidin biosynthesis, with MmCHI2 being the main CHI responsible for anthocyanin accumulation. Both MmCHI1 and MmCHI2 play roles in fruit ripening and have a positive relationship with anthocyanin content.

Ginkgo biloba delays light-induced photoreceptor degeneration through antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties

Maryam Chudhary et al.

Summary: Intense exposure to bright light can lead to retinal damage, while Ginkgo biloba extract has a protective effect on photoreceptor cell degeneration. Exposure to bright light increases oxidative stress-induced cell apoptosis, with EGb 761 treatment reversing these changes.

Multi-tissue transcriptome analysis of two Begonia species reveals dynamic patterns of evolution in the chalcone synthase gene family

Katie Emelianova et al.

Summary: The study on the chalcone synthase (CHS) gene family in Begonia demonstrates the important role of gene duplication in generating diversity. Phylogenetic analysis showed high duplicate turnover in the CHS gene family, with all CHS members in Begonia arising recently after the divergence of Begonia and Cucumis. While expression profiles were similar within orthologous pairs, there was high inter-ortholog expression variation.

Hailin Liu et al.

Summary: Analysis of a nearly complete genome of Ginkgo biloba has revealed the reasons behind genome expansion and identified candidate genes associated with the formation of spermatophore flagellum, advancing our understanding of gymnosperm evolution. The genome provides new insights into the expansion and evolution of gymnosperms, along with a detailed annotation of protein-coding genes.

Genomic editing of intronic enhancers unveils their role in fine-tuning tissue-specific gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana

Fanli Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of intronic enhancers in gene expression regulation in Arabidopsis thaliana, confirming the functionality of predicted enhancers through transgenic assays. Deletion of certain intronic enhancers resulted in transcriptional repression of target genes, leading to distinct phenotypic effects on plant morphology and development at specific developmental stages.
