Recent developments in microbial degradation of polypropylene: Integrated approaches towards a sustainable environment

Ashvinder Kumar Rana et al.

Summary: Fossil-fuel-based plastics have caused significant environmental issues, but some bacteria have the ability to degrade and metabolize them, suggesting the potential of biotechnologies based on plastic biodegradation. Polypropylene (PP), one of the most consumed plastics, is somewhat difficult to degrade under natural conditions, but scientists have made efforts in using other microbes and materials to enhance its biodegradation. Current methods such as gravimetric analysis and physical characterization are not sufficient to confirm the biodegradation of PP, so new techniques need to be explored. Further studies are also needed to investigate plastic-degrading microorganisms and improve enzymatic strategies.

Biobased plasticizer and cellulose nanocrystals improve mechanical properties of polylactic acid composites

Martin Eichers et al.

Summary: Polylactic acid (PLA) is a commercially available biopolymer that is widely used in additive manufacturing. However, its low ductility and impact strength limit its application in commercial plastic products. This research aims to improve the mechanical properties of PLA composites by using biobased materials. The addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), as well as polyethylene glycol (PEG) and maleic anhydride (MA), was found to enhance the mechanical and ductile properties of PLA. The results suggest that the incorporation of CNC, plasticizer, and coupling agent can improve the physical and mechanical properties of PLA composites.

Interfacial improvements in cellulose nanofibers reinforced polylactide bionanocomposites prepared by in situ reactive extrusion

Feng-Jiao Li et al.

Summary: In-situ grafting of PLA onto cellulose nanofibers using DCP as initiator enhanced the interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of the resulting bionanocomposites, with significant improvements in tensile modulus, strength, elongation at break, and impact strength. The increased crystallinity of the grafted CNF-g-PLA and improved melt strength of the nanocomposites contribute to the enhanced properties.

Summary: Extensive research was conducted on the storage stability of oxygen plasma-treated PLA film, revealing the best wettability after 2 and 10 minutes of activation time. The degree of hydrophobic recovery depends on treatment time and is most stable for 6 minutes. PLA hydrophobic recovery reached its peak after a storage period of 14 days.

Preparation Characterization of Modified Poly(Lactic Acid) Using Dicumyl Peroxide and Tetraglycidyl Diamino Diphenyl Methane

Sung Wook Hwang et al.

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was modified with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and tetraglycidyl diamino diphenyl methane (TGDDM) to improve melt viscosity and molecular weight. While DCP led to branching or crosslinking and decreased melt flow index, TGDDM resulted in chain extension or branching and increased number- and weight-average molecular weights. The mechanical properties of modified PLA showed marginal changes, with slight decreases in elongation at break observed.

Effect of multi-functional epoxy chain extender on the weathering resistance performance of Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)

Duo Tang et al.

Summary: The effects of multi-functional epoxy chain extender (Joncryl ADR 4370) content on the degradation, mechanical properties, and molecular weight of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) were investigated through natural and artificial weathering processes. The degradation mechanism of PBAT during weathering is mainly photo-degradation and hydrolyzation. With increasing chain extender content, the degradation rate of PBAT increases, while the loss velocity of tensile strength decreases. The formation of a crosslinked network structure due to excessive chain extenders plays a significant role in maintaining tensile strength during degradation.
