Toughened Hydrogels through UV Grafting of Cellulose Nanofibers

Xianpeng Yang et al.

Summary: The purpose of this research is to develop toughened hydrogels through adjusting the interfacial interactions between cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and a polymer matrix. It was found that hydrogels made with hardwood-based CNFs are more stretchable and softer compared to those made with softwood-based CNFs. The study highlights the importance of surface chemistry of CNFs in fabricating nanocomposites.

Engineering nanocomposite hydrogels using dynamic bonds

Cheng-Hsun Lu et al.

Summary: Nanocomposite hydrogels synthesized using dynamic bonds, including both dynamic covalent and non-covalent bonds, offer versatile properties for biomedical applications. Dynamic bonds provide self-healing and stimulus responsiveness to the hydrogels, and their presence at polymer interfaces determines the role of particles as fillers or crosslinkers in the hydrogels. Multiple examples of NC hydrogels fabricated using dynamic bonds are discussed in this review, highlighting their design, preparation, properties, applications, and future prospects.

Advanced and versatile lignin-derived biodegradable composite film materials toward a sustainable world

Han-Min Wang et al.

Summary: The excessive use of petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastic products has led to severe environmental pollution and ecological problems, prompting the development of biodegradable and renewable alternative materials. Lignin, a plentiful aromatic polymer with excellent biodegradability and biocompatibility, has shown great potential for creating diverse functional and sustainable materials to replace plastics. Recent advancements in the preparation and utilization of lignin-derived biodegradable film materials have garnered significant attention for their applications in sensors, energy storage systems, packaging, and biomedical materials.
