Optimization of binary acids pretreatment of corncob biomass for enhanced recovery of cellulose to produce bioethanol

P. Selvakumar et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that chemical pretreatment with binary acids effectively removed lignin and hemicellulose from corncob biomass, leading to increased cellulose recovery and substrate porosity. Ethanol fermentation of the hydrolysates resulted in a high bioethanol concentration. Therefore, the binary acids pretreatment can be considered as an alternative approach for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment.

Ultrasounds application for nut and coffee wastes valorisation via biomolecules solubilisation and methane production

A. Oliva et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of ultrasounds coupled with hydrothermal and methanol-based pretreatments for polyphenols and sugar solubilisation from hazelnut skin, almond shell, and spent coffee grounds. The results showed that the MeOH-based medium achieved the highest solubilisation of polyphenols and sugars from hazelnut skin. However, the MeOH-based media were not suitable for direct anaerobic digestion. The water-based liquors obtained from pre-treated almond shell and spent coffee grounds exhibited higher methane potential despite having a lower sugar concentration. The methane potential of the ultrasounds pretreated hazelnut skin, almond shell, and spent coffee grounds was not improved regardless of the pretreatment condition.

High-efficiency separation of hemicellulose from bamboo by one-step freeze-thaw-assisted alkali treatment

Fanyan Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, the separation of bamboo hemicellulose was successfully achieved via a one-step freeze-thaw-assisted alkali treatment (OFT/AT). The selectivity of hemicellulose separation was improved, leading to a higher separation yield compared to conventional freeze-thaw-assisted alkaline treatment (FT/AT). The inhibition of lignin and cellulose separation was observed as the alkali concentration decreased, while the extraction yield of hemicellulose increased. Structural analysis revealed that the extracted hemicellulose had a relatively complete molecular structure, providing theoretical support for efficient hemicellulose separation by alkali treatment.

Influence of interaction between biomass inorganic components and volatiles on corncob pyrolysis and char structure

Yingquan Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that biomass inorganic components accelerated the secondary pyrolysis of corncob and altered the molecular structure of the char. Deashing reduced CO2 production and increased levoglucosan (LG) yield. At low temperatures, biomass inorganic components promoted the depolymerization and glycosidic bond breaking of biomass polymer. At medium temperatures, they promoted the conversion of linear structures to cyclopentanone and benzenes.

Enzymatic formulation strategies unlock highly-efficient saccharification of distinct pretreated corncobs

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Optimization of enzyme cocktail composition is an effective approach to enhance the hydrolytic efficiency of lignocellulose. This study quantitatively formulated the optimal enzyme ratios for efficient hydrolysis of corncobs with different pretreatments, and also determined the specific types of cellulases required for each pretreatment method. The results showed that high yields of glucose and xylose can be achieved simultaneously using the optimized enzyme formulation strategy, even at high solid loading, and high isopropanol yield was also obtained without detoxification of the hydrolysate.
