Photodegradation of organic micropollutants in aquatic environment: Importance, factors and processes

Zhongyu Guo et al.

Summary: Photochemical reactions are important in aquatic eco-systems and especially efficient for organic micropollutants that cannot undergo hydrolysis or biodegradation. Recent studies suggest that photodegradation may play a more significant role than biodegradation in transforming organic micropollutants in the aquatic environment. The process of photodegradation is complex and can be influenced by factors such as water matrix composition and physical conditions. This review provides a concise summary of the importance of photodegradation, major processes involved, and highlights knowledge gaps in the field of environmental photochemistry.

Degradation of anticorrosive agent benzotriazole by electron beam irradiation: Mechanisms, degradation pathway and toxicological analysis

Wentao Yin et al.

Summary: Benzotriazole (BTA) is a emerging and persistent contaminant used in household and engineering applications, with traditional wastewater treatments being ineffective in removing it. This study found that electron beam irradiation is a promising method for effectively degrading BTA in aquatic environments, with oxidative hydroxyl radicals playing a critical role. Additionally, the presence of H2O2 and K2S2O8 can significantly enhance the degradation extent and mineralization efficiency of BTA. Toxicity evaluation showed that as irradiation proceeded, the toxicity of BTA decreased.

Kirill Fedorov et al.

Summary: High-performance water treatment systems based on cavitational processes have gained increasing interest in the scientific community. Hydrodynamic cavitation has been proven as an effective alternative, reagent-free method for treating various pollutants in water. The combination of cavitation with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has shown enhanced oxidation capacity and the ability to degrade persistent contaminants. The synergistic effect between integrated technologies in hybrid processes contributes to their improved performance. This review discusses principles, mechanisms, and factors influencing the effectiveness of cavitation-AOP coupling, as well as the economic feasibility of these hybrid techniques in large-scale wastewater treatment.

Efficient degradation of tetracycline by singlet oxygen-dominated peroxymonosulfate activation with magnetic nitrogen-doped porous carbon

Shaohua Wu et al.

Summary: The study thoroughly examined the degradation of tetracycline (TC) in the constructed Co-N/C-PMS system, finding that the removal rate of TC reached 85.4% when Co-N/C and PMS were added simultaneously, with a higher degradation rate compared to using Co-N/C or PMS alone. The system was identified as a singlet oxygen-dominated nonradical reaction, providing a promising approach for eliminating TC in water treatment.

Hydroxyl radicals can significantly influence the toxicity of ofloxacin transformation products during ozonation

Yide He et al.

Summary: Ozonation is commonly used to remove recalcitrant contaminants in water, but the toxicity of transformation products (TPs) generated from ozone and hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) reactions has not been well studied. This research investigated the degradation of the antibiotic OFX under different Rct values (the exposure ratio of center dot OH to O3) and found that TPs formed at high-Rct conditions were less toxic. The study suggests that center dot OH may be more efficient in eliminating the toxicity of OFX than ozone.
