Scaffolding Biomaterials for 3D Cultivated Meat: Prospects and Challenges

Claire Bomkamp et al.

Summary: Cultivating meat from stem cells offers a promising solution to address the negative externalities of meat production, but requires innovative scaffolding technology. While many scaffolding technologies have been developed for biomedical tissue engineering, cultivated meat production faces unique constraints related to scale, cost, and final product attributes such as texture and food safety. Successful replication of vertebrate skeletal muscle properties and ongoing scaffolding innovation are essential for the development of high-quality cultivated meat with minimized production costs.

Single-Cell RNA-Sequencing Reveals Lineage-Specific Regulatory Changes of Fibroblasts and Vascular Endothelial Cells in Keloids

Xuanyu Liu et al.

Summary: This research utilized single-cell RNA sequencing to uncover the cellular heterogeneity of keloid tissue, particularly significant expansion of fibroblast and vascular endothelial cell subpopulations. The roles of TGFb and Eph-ephrin signaling pathways in keloids were highlighted, with key regulators like TWIST1, FOXO3, and SMAD3 identified. Additionally, activation of tumor-related pathways in keloid fibroblasts and vascular endothelial cells may contribute to the malignant features of keloids.

Culture of SARS-CoV-2 in a panel of laboratory cell lines, permissivity, and differences in growth profile

Nathalie Wurtz et al.

Summary: The study tested 4 locally isolated strains of SARS-CoV-2 on 34 cell lines commonly used for isolating human pathogenic microorganisms, finding that 7 cell lines were able to support virus replication. Results indicate that there are differences in cytopathogenic effects and multiplication abilities in cells with different strains.

Summary: Viruses manipulate host cellular machinery by targeting the cytoskeleton, facilitating entry, replication, and spread within insect hosts. While mechanisms are well-documented in certain virus-insect interactions, further research is needed for a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon in other insect-virus systems.

Cell Line Platforms Support Research into Arthropod Immunity

Cynthia L. Goodman et al.

Summary: Cell lines are valuable tools for studying insect and tick immunity, allowing researchers to investigate how these organisms recognize and respond to infections, as well as develop strategies for future research. In particular, immortal arthropod cell lines provide a cost-effective and consistent platform for understanding and controlling important insects and ticks.
