Inflammation Is Present, Persistent and More Sensitive to Proinflammatory Triggers in Celiac Disease Enterocytes

Monia Porpora et al.

Summary: Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by a genetic predisposition to an abnormal T cell-mediated immune response to gluten in the diet. This study aimed to investigate the role of enterocytes in CD intestinal inflammation and their response to proinflammatory factors such as gliadin and viruses. The findings suggest that CD enterocytes have constitutive inflammation and are more sensitive to inflammatory stimuli.

Associations between Gene Polymorphisms in Pro-inflammatory Cytokines and the Risk of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Meta-analysis

Wenjie Liu et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis showed that IL-1Brs1143627 and IL-6rs1800795 polymorphisms were significantly associated with the risk of IBD in overall population and Caucasians. Additionally, IL-8rs4073 polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of IBD in overall population and Asians. Moreover, IL-18rs187238 polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of CD, and IL-18rs1946518 polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of IBD in Asians.

Sterile inflammation drives multiple programmed cell death pathways in the gut

Carolina N. Ruera et al.

Summary: Intestinal epithelial cells have rapid turnover and are maintained by different forms of cell death mechanisms. In inflammation, p31-43 can activate multiple cell death pathways, including apoptosis, pyroptosis, and necroptosis.

IL-1β and the Intestinal Epithelial Tight Junction Barrier

Lauren W. Kaminsky et al.

Summary: The intestinal epithelial tight junction (TJ) barrier plays a crucial role in intestinal diseases, especially inflammatory bowel diseases. The IL-1 beta-induced increase in intestinal TJ permeability is a key factor in the inflammatory process.
