Waveform Control Pulsed Field Magnetization of RE-Ba-Cu-O Bulk Superconducting Rings

Yee Kin Tsui et al.

Summary: The potential application of ring-shaped, single grain RE-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors in MRI and NMR systems as an alternative to conventional permanent magnets could be significantly improved by optimizing the waveform of the magnetizing pulse used in the pulsed field magnetization (PFM) method.

Reliable 4.8 T trapped magnetic fields in Gd-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors using pulsed field magnetization

Difan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study reports a 4.8 T peak trapped magnetic field achieved in a 36 mm diameter GdBa2Cu3O7-delta-Ag bulk superconductor at 30K using pulsed field magnetization. A reliable two-step multi-pulse PFM process based on the understanding and exploitation of avalanche-like flux jump phenomenon in these materials was developed to achieve this. The applied pulsed magnetic field necessary for trapping 4.8 T was only 5.29 T, with a remarkable magnetization efficiency of 90% (BT/Ba).

Visualization of the Field Penetration at the Shielding Current Break and Its Restoration in the Pulse Magnetized YBCO Ring

P. A. Brazhnik et al.

Summary: The Hall scanning method was used to measure the distribution of the trapped magnetic field above the melt-grown high-temperature superconducting (YBCO) ring during various modes of the pulsed field magnetization. The study found that the screening current breaks down in a certain region of the ring due to local overheating and destruction of superconductivity, leading to the appearance of a current break. However, in other parts of the ring, there is still a significant trapped magnetic field. When the descending time of the magnetizing field is increased to sufficiently long periods, the current break has time to cool, and the irregularity of the trapped magnetic field in that region disappears.

Improved pulsed field magnetisation in MgB2 trapped-field magnets

D. A. Moseley et al.

Summary: By studying the flux density during PFM in MgB2 bulk superconductors, improvements in cooling architecture were found to increase flux trapping capabilities and alter flux motion. These enhancements resulted in the largest trapped field for a single MgB2 bulk sample magnetized by a solenoidal pulsed field magnet.

Modelling higher trapped fields by pulsed field magnetisation of composite bulk MgB2 superconducting rings

V Cientanni et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that composite structures of MgB2 rings can trap high magnetic fields effectively when magnetised by pulsed field. Using a finite element method modelling framework with a commercial software package, accurate simulation of experimental data is achieved. It is also found that the number of copper layers and the addition of an iron yoke play crucial roles in enhancing the magnetic field performance.
