Co-Wound Superconducting Wire for Quench Detection in Fusion Magnets

N. Bykovskiy et al.

Summary: High temperature superconducting materials are commonly used in fusion magnet design proposals, but reliable quench detection in HTS conductors remains a challenge. Using high normal state resistance superconducting wire as a sensor can improve sensitivity for voltage-based quench detection methods. Different wire options can be adapted for fusion conductors, allowing for flexibility in design and experimental verification of the method.

Quench Detection Performance of Low-Temperature Superconducting Quench Detectors for REBCO Tape in Magnetic Fields

Shin Hasegawa et al.

Summary: A quench detection method using a low-temperature superconducting quench detector (QD) has been proposed to protect rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) coils in magnetic fields at temperatures below 20 K. Experimental results showed that the Nb-Ti/Cu-Ni QD could achieve quick quench detection before the thermal runaway of the REBCO tape at 0-9 T, while the Nb-Ti/Cu QD only exhibited this capability at 9 T. Numerical evaluation also confirmed the feasibility of quench detection time with Nb-Ti QDs attached to a locally degraded REBCO tape at 4.2 K in 0-9 T, with a requirement for the contact resistance to be lower than 1.0 x 10(-3) m(2)K/W for quick quench detection.

Study of a Current-Based Quench Detection Method for CCT Magnets via a Co-Wound Superconducting Sensing Wire

Jiani Gao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a current-based quench detection method for Nb-3 Sn CCT type accelerator magnets, which uses a co-wound superconducting wire and current derivative sensor in the magnet. The detection system relies on the drop in current during a quench to detect the quench, and the advantages and limitations of this method are discussed.

Conceptual Design of HTS Bitter Magnet Above 25T Using a Fast Magnetic Field Computational Method

Lingfeng Zhu et al.

Summary: A novel HTS Bitter magnet structure is proposed with REBCO annular plates with slits soldered at the edges, Experimentally, the resistance of the soldering joint is proven to be small enough to control current distribution. The magnetic field and stress distribution of the magnet are calculated using a fast computational method based on a CNN, and the feasibility of the structure and efficiency of the algorithm are experimentally verified on a model magnet.
