Formation of Tridymite and Evidence for a Hydrothermal History at Gale Crater, Mars

A. S. Yen et al.

Summary: The discovery of tridymite on Mars suggests that it was formed in-place through hydrothermal processes rather than being derived from silicic volcanic rocks. This finding is supported by chemical patterns similar to silica-rich alteration halos.

The role of hydrothermal sulfate reduction in the sulfur cycles within Europa: Laboratory experiments on sulfate reduction at 100 MPa

Shuya Tan et al.

Summary: There is evidence to suggest the presence of a subsurface ocean within Europa, but much remains unknown about its chemistry and geochemical cycles. Recent observations indicate that sulfur ions and SO2 from Io may accumulate as sulfuric acids in Europa's hemisphere, while chloride salts may appear on chaotic terrains, potentially altering the primary oceanic anion. Laboratory experiments confirm the potential role of hydrothermal sulfate reduction as a sink for exogenic sulfate within Europa's ocean.

An experimental study of photo-oxidation of Fe(II): Implications for the formation of Fe(III) (hydro)oxides on early Mars and Earth

Haruhisa Tabata et al.

Summary: The photo-oxidation of aqueous Fe(II) to Fe(III) likely played a role in the formation of iron oxide deposits on early Mars and Earth. The quantum yield of this photo-oxidation process increases with pH and is wavelength-dependent. Photo-oxidation may explain the amounts of Fe(III) (hydro)oxides in Gale sediments and was more intense in Archean oceans than previously thought.

Thermodynamic Constraints on Smectite and Iron Oxide Formation at Gale Crater, Mars: Insights into Potential Free Energy from Aerobic Fe Oxidation in Lake Water-Groundwater Mixing Zone

Sakiko Kikuchi et al.

Summary: The presence of saponite and iron oxides in Sheepbed mudstone on Mars suggests a habitable environment for chemolithoautotrophy. The possible mixing of surface water and groundwater may explain the formation of these minerals and create a potential habitable zone. The findings contribute to a better understanding of potential habitability on Mars.

Brine-driven destruction of clay minerals in Gale crater, Mars

Summary: The sedimentary rock record on Mars provides insight into ancient geological processes, potentially relevant to astrobiology. The Curiosity rover's exploration on Mount Sharp revealed spatial differences in mineralogy and suggested the widespread destabilization of silicate minerals driven by silica-poor brines in ancient Mars.
