Age-Related Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in the Cochlea Are Exacerbated by Long-Term, Short-Duration Noise Stimulation

Veronica Fuentes-Santamaria et al.

Summary: This study found that noise exposure accelerated age-related hearing loss in young rats by causing progressive dysfunction and early degeneration of cochlear cells and structures. The findings provide functional, structural, and molecular evidence of the interaction between age and noise in exacerbating presbycusis.

Chinese-English Speakers' Perception of Pitch in Their Non-Tonal Language: Reinterpreting English as a Tonal-Like Language

Marta Ortega-Llebaria et al.

Summary: There are significant differences in pitch processing between languages, with Mandarin-English bilingual speakers showing different pitch perception compared to native English speakers. Tonal experience influences the perception of pitch in non-tonal languages for Mandarin-English speakers, affecting both pre-lexical and lexical levels. Mandarin-English speakers organize words in both languages based on F0 and segmental information, while native English controls focus mainly on segmental information.

Search for Electrophysiological Indices of Hidden Hearing Loss in Humans: Click Auditory Brainstem Response Across Sound Levels and in Background Noise

Chandan H. Suresh et al.

Summary: This study evaluated potential electrophysiological changes specific to individuals at risk for hidden hearing loss (HHL). The results suggest that individuals at high risk for cochlear synaptopathy show smaller wave I amplitudes and enhanced amplitude ratio V/I compared to low-risk individuals, particularly at moderate sound levels. These findings indicate a reduced susceptibility to masking effects in individuals with a history of high sound over-exposure.

Speech perception in noise: Masking and unmasking

Xianhui Wang et al.

Summary: Speech perception is crucial for daily communication, but can be challenging in the presence of background noise or multiple talkers. This study reviews and compares existing findings on speech perception and unmasking in cocktail party listening environments in English and Mandarin Chinese, identifying factors and differences that release speech perception from masking in the two languages. Future research directions include further exploring the literature differences between the two languages on the reviewed topic.
