Lung cancer LDCT screening and mortality reduction - evidence, pitfalls and future perspectives

Matthijs Oudkerk et al.

Summary: Despite being the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, lung cancer mortality has been reduced through LDCT screening in high-risk populations. Screening programs have been implemented in the USA and are currently underway in the UK, with a framework called SPIRAL to define future research scope.

The integrated screening action model (I-SAM): A theory-based approach to inform intervention development

Kathryn A. Robb

Summary: The study proposed an Integrated Screening Action Model (I-SAM) to improve screening access by synthesizing existing health behavior models and empirical evidence. The I-SAM focuses on three key aspects: a sequence of stages in engaging in screening behavior, the interaction between participant and environmental influences, and targets for intervention based on 'capability', 'opportunity', and 'motivation'. This integrated model aims to support understanding of screening behavior and identify intervention targets for improving screening effectiveness through an iterative process of testing and refinement.

Lung cancer mortality reduction by LDCT screening: UKLS randomised trial results and international meta-analysis

John K. Field et al.

Summary: The UKLS trial showed that a single LDCT screening can significantly reduce lung cancer mortality, with results similar to the NELSON and NLST trials. The meta-analysis of nine randomized trials provided unequivocal support for lung cancer screening in identified risk groups.
