A benchmark for oncologic outcomes and model for lethal recurrence risk after transoral robotic resection of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers

Robert M. Brody et al.

Summary: This study describes the oncologic outcomes of a large cohort of HPV+ OPSCC patients after TORS-based therapy and develops a risk prediction model for recurrence. The study finds that margins are relevant for assessing lethal recurrence risk in clinical trial design and post-treatment surveillance.

An analysis of distant metastasis cases from HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Faris F. Brkic et al.

Summary: Some patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma develop distant metastasis and face dire prognosis. Patients treated with primary chemoradiotherapy had a significantly better outcome in terms of survival. However, surgical resection after initial diagnosis was associated with a shorter survival time for patients with distant metastasis, partly due to delayed adjuvant therapy caused by surgical site complications. Immediate management of surgical site complications and systemic treatment after initial diagnosis may benefit the clinical outcome of HPV-associated distant metastases. Further studies are needed for validation of these results.

Oncologic outcomes of human papillomavirus-associated oropharynx carcinoma treated with surgery alone: A 12-institution study of 344 patients

William R. Ryan et al.

Summary: Surgery alone for HPV-associated oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma with AJCC 7th edition pT0-2N0-N2b and zero to 3 pathologic lymph nodes without adverse features results in high rates of disease-free survival, disease-specific survival, overall survival, and successful salvage treatment. Further investigation of treatment de-escalation in this population is warranted given short-term follow-up data.

The PRISMA 2020 statement: an updated guideline for reporting systematic reviews

Juan Jose Yepes-Nunez et al.

Summary: The PRISMA statement was designed to help systematic reviewers transparently report the purpose, methods, and findings of their reviews. The PRISMA 2020 statement replaces the 2009 statement, includes new reporting guidance, and modifies the structure and presentation of items for better implementation.
