T-Hex: Tilted hexagonal grids for rapid 3D imaging

Maria Engel et al.

Summary: The purpose of this work is to devise and demonstrate an encoding strategy for 3D MRI that reconciles high speed with flexible segmentation, uniform k-space density, and benign T-2* effects. The use of tilted hexagonal (T-Hex) sampling is shown to achieve greater imaging speed with near-optimal SNR efficiency, particularly in the intermediate resolution regime of 1 to 4 mm. T-Hex EPI combines extended coverage per shot with increased robustness against off-resonance effects, making it a promising technique for time-resolved applications like fMRI.

Flow in an hourglass: particle friction and stiffness matter

Tivadar Pongo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the discharge process of granular flow from a silo through experimental and numerical methods. It found that particle stiffness significantly affects the discharge characteristics, with differences in discharge behavior observed between deformable and hard grains at different friction coefficients. The study also analyzed the pressure fields during discharge and proposed a formulation to predict the flow rate decrease with decreasing filling height for soft particles with low friction coefficient.

Silo discharge of mixtures of soft and rigid grains

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the outflow dynamics and clogging phenomena of mixtures of soft, elastic low-friction grains and hard frictional spheres in a quasi-2D silo. The addition of even small amounts of hard grains to soft grains can have significant consequences, affecting clogging probabilities and outflow velocities. Experimental results compared with numerical simulations suggest a strong influence of inter-species particle friction.
