Changes in soil organic carbon stock and nutrient status after conversion of pasture land to cultivated land in semi-arid areas of northern Ethiopia

Girmay Gebresamuel et al.

Summary: Conversion of native pasturelands to cultivated land has led to a decline in soil fertility and agricultural productivity. This study investigated the extent and rate of land-use conversion and its impact on soil properties. Results showed that the conversion has increased at a medium rate of 17 ha year(-1) over the past 42 years, while soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorous, available potassium, and electrical conductivity have declined significantly.

Land-Use Change Depletes Quantity and Quality of Soil Organic Matter Fractions in Ethiopian Highlands

Iftekhar U. Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of land-use change on soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen stocks in North-West Ethiopia. It finds that conversion of natural forest to grazing and cropland leads to significant depletion of C and N stocks. However, eucalyptus plantation shows potential for soil C recovery. The study also highlights the importance of considering the quality of SOM when assessing disturbance impacts on SOC and N stocks.

Summary: This study examined the impact of different livestock and agricultural systems on soil carbon and nutrient stocks. The findings suggest that certain land uses can maintain nutrient stocks, while others result in nutrient losses or accumulations. Irrigated crops decrease soil carbon and nitrogen stocks, while fertilization helps increase phosphorus and potassium stocks.

Impact of Land-Use Changes on Soil Properties and Carbon Pools in India: A Meta-analysis

Rajeev Padbhushan et al.

Summary: This study found that land-use changes have significant impacts on soil carbon and microbial biomass. Grasslands, plantation lands, and cultivated lands experienced the greatest loss of soil organic carbon compared to native forest lands. Microbial biomass was lower in other land uses compared to forests. All land uses had higher carbon dioxide equivalent emissions than forest land. Conversion of forest land to cultivated land resulted in losses of total carbon, labile carbon, non-labile carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and soil organic carbon stocks. Changes in soil carbon pools and properties were more pronounced in surface soils. The restoration of carbon stocks varied among different land uses.

Microbial community variation and its relationship with soil carbon accumulation during long-term oasis formation

Chenhua Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic changes in soil microbial communities after desert reclamation, finding that microbial abundance and community structure were positively correlated with soil organic carbon accumulation. The shifts in microbial communities were closely associated with increased soil moisture and nutrients as well as decreased salinity and pH levels. The predominant factor driving microbial community changes and soil carbon accumulation was believed to be the increased input of plant residue due to enhanced water and nitrogen availability after desert reclamation.

Summary: The research found that warming has significant effects on the functional traits of absorptive plant roots, with fine-root biomass, production, respiration, and nitrogen concentration increasing with warming, while root carbon : nitrogen ratio and nonstructural carbohydrates decreasing. In short-term experiments, the effect of warming on fine-root biomass weakens with increasing warming magnitude, and the positive effect of warming on fine-root biomass is most pronounced in deeper soil horizons and colder, drier regions.
