Seasonal variability in particulate organic carbon degradation in the Kolyma River, Siberia

Kirsi H. Keskitalo et al.

Summary: Major Arctic rivers are undergoing changes due to climate warming, leading to higher discharge and increased amounts of solutes and organic carbon draining into rivers and coastal seas. The degradation of particulate organic carbon (POC) in these rivers is poorly characterized, and this study examines POC degradation in the Kolyma River. The results show that POC composition and biodegradability differ greatly between seasons.

Low biodegradability of particulate organic carbon mobilized from thaw slumps on the Peel Plateau, NT, and possible chemosynthesis and sorption effects

Sarah Shakil et al.

Summary: Warming and wetting in the western Canadian Arctic are accelerating thaw-driven mass wasting by permafrost thaw slumps, resulting in a significant increase in organic carbon delivery to headwater streams. This study found that the organic carbon from these slumps is mostly deposited in sediments, while dissolved organic carbon is mineralized to CO2. The mineral-rich tills in this region can protect carbon and enhance inorganic carbon sequestration.

Representativeness assessment of the pan-Arctic eddy covariance site network and optimized future enhancements

Martijn M. T. A. Pallandt et al.

Summary: Large changes in the Arctic carbon balance are expected due to climate change-induced warming that threatens ancient permafrost carbon stocks. The eddy covariance (EC) method is used to quantify carbon losses and gains in the Arctic, but a comprehensive assessment of the representativeness of the network is lacking. This study provides an inventory of Arctic EC sites and assesses their representativeness. The results show that improvements in network coverage can be achieved through targeted upgrades and the addition of new sites.

Preferential export of permafrost-derived organic matter as retrogressive thaw slumping intensifies

Lisa Broeder et al.

Summary: Enhanced warming in the Northern high latitudes has intensified thermokarst processes, particularly evident in retrogressive thaw slumps (RTS) in the permafrost zone. Analysis of sediment properties and organic matter composition in different soil layers and mobilized materials from RTS features in the Peel Plateau, Canada indicated that organic matter degradation and hydrodynamic sorting play key roles in influencing the mobilized material. Organic constituents and grain sizes varied between active layer, debris, and runoff deposits, suggesting the need for further research on the impact of intensifying RTS activity on CO2 release and ecosystem carbon fluxes.

Carbon emission from Western Siberian inland waters

Jan Karlsson et al.

Summary: High-latitude regions, particularly Western Siberia, play a crucial role in the carbon cycle and climate system. Emission of carbon from inland waters, such as rivers and lakes, exceeds carbon export to the Arctic Ocean and is a major contributor to the regional carbon balance. This highlights the importance of coupled land-water studies in understanding the contemporary carbon cycle and its response to warming.

Emerging dominance of summer rainfall driving High Arctic terrestrial-aquatic connectivity

C. R. Beel et al.

Summary: Climate warming is causing Arctic annual fluvial energy budgets to shift from snowmelt-dominated to snowmelt- and rainfall-dominated hydrological regimes, enhancing late summer and fall terrestrial-aquatic connectivity and higher material fluxes. Increased late summer rainfall enhances terrestrial-aquatic connectivity, but permafrost disturbances can reduce some organic carbon export.

Statistical upscaling of ecosystem CO2 fluxes across the terrestrial tundra and boreal domain: Regional patterns and uncertainties

Anna-Maria Virkkala et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatial patterns and drivers of CO2 fluxes in high-latitude regions using statistical models, showing that machine learning and ensemble predictions outperformed traditional regression methods. CO2 sink strength was found to be larger in boreal biome compared to tundra, with the variability reflecting heterogeneity in soil organic carbon stocks, climate, and vegetation productivity. Despite uncertainty, the high-latitude region was estimated to be an annual CO2 sink during 1990-2015 based on ensemble predictions of NEE.

Downstream Evolution of Particulate Organic Matter Composition From Permafrost Thaw Slumps

Kirsi H. Keskitalo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that retrogressive thaw slumps on the Peel Plateau release old, Pleistocene-aged permafrost POC into the stream network, with most of the released POC consisting of recalcitrant compounds that are not easily degradable in the short term, but still have the potential to degrade over longer time scales and larger geographical ranges.

The relative importance of seasonality versus regional and network-specific properties in determining the variability of fluvial CO2, CH4 and dissolved organic carbon across boreal Quebec

Ryan H. S. Hutchins et al.

Summary: Streams and rivers play a significant role in emitting carbon (C) into the atmosphere, with region being the main driver of CO2 and CH4 concentrations and fluxes, and DOC concentration. While pCO(2) and pCH(4) show spatial and temporal variation, the overall fluxes remain relatively constant across regions and seasons due to the interplay between concentration and gas exchange at the network scale. This suggests that seasonality may be dampened when considering fluvial emissions at large spatial scales.

Soil respiration strongly offsets carbon uptake in Alaska and Northwest Canada

Jennifer D. Watts et al.

Summary: Research indicates that soil respiration in the Arctic-boreal region is most significant during the summer, with considerable emissions even during the winter despite frozen surface conditions. Model estimates suggest that the region experienced an annual loss of approximately 591 Tg CO2 from soil respiration during the 2016-2017 period, with summer months contributing 58%, winter months contributing 15%, and shoulder months contributing 27%.

The implications of permafrost thaw and land cover change on snow water equivalent accumulation, melt and runoff in discontinuous permafrost peatlands

Ryan F. Connon et al.

Summary: The study in the discontinuous permafrost zone of the Northwest Territories, Canada revealed that snowmelt has a significant impact on moisture supply and stream hydrographs during the short growing season. The expansion of wetlands due to permafrost thaw may lead to faster snowmelt and increased spring freshet runoff.

Thaw-driven mass wasting couples slopes with downstream systems, and effects propagate through Arctic drainage networks

Steven Kokelj et al.

Summary: The intensification of thaw-driven mass wasting is transforming glacially conditioned permafrost terrain, coupling slopes with aquatic systems, and triggering a cascade of downstream effects. Research quantifies the enlargement of retrogressive thaw slumps and describes the coupling processes between slopes and downstream systems, investigates catchment-scale patterns of slope thermokarst impacts, and maps the propagation of effects through hydrological networks. The study reveals a significant increase in catchment-scale geomorphic activity and the coupling of slope and hydrological systems, with downstream effects impacting streams, coastlines, and lakes in northwest Canada.
