Double-scale analysis on the detectability of irrigation signals from remote sensing soil moisture over an area with complex topography in central Italy

Jacopo Dari et al.

Summary: This study proposes a double-scale analysis on the detectability of irrigation occurrence in central Italy using remote sensing soil moisture. The study finds that despite a lack of detailed information on irrigation worldwide, irrigation signals can be detected through remotely sensed soil moisture data at different spatial resolutions, with plot-scale data being necessary.

A monthly distributed agro-hydrological model for irrigation district in arid region with shallow groundwater table

Yeqiang Wen et al.

Summary: This study developed a monthly distributed agrohydrological model (DAHMID) based on remote sensing and groundwater depth measurements for studying agro-hydrological processes in arid irrigation districts. The results showed that interior drainage plays an important role in the climate processes of arid irrigation districts, and evapotranspiration is the major water consumption. Irrigation has a significant impact on soil water and groundwater depth.

Irrigation Mapping on Two Contrasted Climatic Contexts Using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 Data

Ehsan Elwan et al.

Summary: This study proposes an operational approach to map irrigated areas based on the synergy of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. The proposed methodology is validated in two study sites in Spain and Italy, representing semiarid and humid climatic contexts, respectively. The results show the importance of multi-site training and the consideration of optical/radar synergy and multi-scale spatial information for accurate classification.

Mapping rice area and yield in northeastern asia by incorporating a crop model with dense vegetation index profiles from a geostationary satellite

Jong-Min Yeom et al.

Summary: This study utilized satellite data and remote sensing techniques to estimate the area and yield of paddy rice fields in Northeastern Asia, and validated the accuracy of the model through simulation. Analysis of vegetation indices and meteorological parameters can effectively monitor and manage the crop productivity in paddy fields, enhancing the effectiveness of agricultural decision support systems.

Modeling agro-hydrological processes and analyzing water use in a super-large irrigation district (Hetao) of arid upper Yellow River basin

Lvyang Xiong et al.

Summary: This study focused on modeling and analyzing the agro-ecohydrological processes and water use performance in large irrigation districts of the Yellow River basin. The study revealed regional characteristics such as shallow depth to groundwater table, high soil moisture and evapotranspiration in the Hetao Irrigation District, along with spatial variations of soil salt content and its impact on crop yields. Furthermore, the study highlighted the relatively low water use efficiency and non-beneficial water consumption issues in the Hetao district, providing valuable insights for improving water use and management in similar large irrigation districts.

Detecting and mapping irrigated areas in a Mediterranean environment by using remote sensing soil moisture and a land surface model

Jacopo Dari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the capability of remotely sensed soil moisture products to detect irrigation signals in an intensively irrigated area in North East Spain, proposing a method to map actually irrigated areas using the K-means clustering algorithm. The data sets used in this study include SMOS, SMAP, Sentinel-1, and ASCAT, with downscaled versions obtained by the DISPATCH algorithm. L-band passive microwave downscaling products, particularly SMAP at 1 km, show the best performance in detecting irrigation signals in the study area.

Summary: Mapping irrigated croplands accurately over the contiguous U.S. for each year from 1997 to 2017 is crucial for managing water resources efficiently. By utilizing remote sensing data, machine learning techniques, and generating the Landsat-based Irrigation Dataset (LANID-US), this study accurately reconstructed NASS irrigation patterns and demonstrated the overall accuracy of nationwide pixel-level locational assessment.
