Growing impact of wildfire on western US water supply

A. Park Williams et al.

Summary: Streamflow often increases after fire, and this effect has unclear persistence and importance to regional water resources. This study examines 72 forested basins in the western United States (WUS) and finds that multibasin mean streamflow significantly increases in the 6 water years after a fire. The streamflow response is proportional to the fire extent and is significant in all four seasons. Furthermore, historical fire-climate relationships and climate model projections suggest that wildfires will become more frequent in the coming decades, leading to increased regional streamflow.

Rapid intensification of the emerging southwestern North American megadrought in 2020-2021

A. Park Williams et al.

Summary: Southwestern North America has been experiencing a megadrought since 2000, with lower precipitation and higher temperatures. This drought, which spans from 2000 to 2021, is the driest 22-year period since 800 AD, with 19% of the severity in 2021 attributed to climate change. The drought severity in southwestern North America from 2000 to 2018 exceeded that of a megadrought in the late-1500s. Following the exceptional drought severity in 2021, which is 19% attributable to anthropogenic climate trends, the period from 2000 to 2021 is the driest 22-year period since at least 800 AD, and it is likely to persist through 2022, matching the duration of the late-1500s megadrought.

A multimillennial snow water equivalent reconstruction from giant sequoia tree rings

R. Touchan et al.

Summary: The study provides the first dendroclimatic reconstruction of May 1 snow water equivalent in central California from 90-2012 CE, showing a significant relationship between SWE and tree-ring growth. The reconstruction model based on the period 1940-2012 performs well in observational data validations. SWE and its reconstruction positively correlate with northeastern Pacific sea surface temperatures, potentially providing predictive ability. Despite relatively stable variability in 20th century SWE, the study suggests potential negative impacts on water availability for the trees in the coming decades.

A Later Onset of the Rainy Season in California

Jelena Lukovic et al.

Summary: The onset of the rainy season in California has been progressively delayed since the 1960s, leading to a shorter and sharper precipitation season. This delay is related to the summer circulation pattern extending into autumn across the North Pacific, resulting in a later start of the North Pacific westerlies.

Future Changes in Snowpack, Snowmelt, and Runoff Potential Extremes Over North America

Eunsang Cho et al.

Summary: Projected changes in extreme snow-related indicators show decreases in the continental US and southern Canada, but increases in Alaska and northern Canada by the late 21st century. California and the Pacific Northwest are expected to experience an increase in extreme runoff potential, potentially leading to larger rain-on-snow floods. Regions with high variability among model ensembles need further investigation to reduce regional uncertainties.

A Shorter, Sharper Rainy Season Amplifies California Wildfire Risk

Daniel L. Swain

Summary: California has seen increasingly severe autumn wildfires in recent decades, with a clear link to climate change. Recent research shows that the delay in autumn precipitation and increased sharpness of precipitation seasonality in California have important implications for ecology and wildfire risk. These observations align with climate model projections, suggesting that recent trends could be a preview of larger changes to come.

Implications of warming on western United States landfalling atmospheric rivers and their flood damages

Alan M. Rhoades et al.

Summary: The study shows that as global warming intensifies, the number of landfalling atmospheric rivers (ARs) and the amount of water they transport will increase. The proportion of beneficial ARs will decrease, while the proportion of hazardous ARs will increase. This shift will result in a gradual increase in flood damages, highlighting the importance of climate mitigation efforts.

A low-to-no snow future and its impacts on water resources in the western United States

Erica R. Siirila-Woodburn et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic climate change is decreasing seasonal snowpacks globally, with significant impacts on water resources, especially in the western United States. Projections show a decline of about 25% in snow water equivalent by 2050, with potential persistent low-to-no snow conditions in 35-60 years if greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated. These changes will alter groundwater and streamflow dynamics in the region.
